Thailand to Slap Import Duties on All Low‑Value Online Goods

Thailand is preparing a major shift in trade policy: import duties will soon apply to all online‑purchased goods, including low‑value items that were previously exempt. The government says the measure will help domestic industries compete and generate revenue, but consumers beg to differ—many fear increased costs and slower delivery times. Online marketplaces and logistics firms are already scrambling to adapt to new classifications and tax codes. The change is expected to affect cross‑border e‑commerce from platforms such as Shopee, Lazada, TikTok and Amazon. Enforcement and customs systems will need to scale up significantly. The decision signals how Thailand is recalibrating its posture in global digital‑trade flows, at a time when regional competitors are also evolving.
