This wasn't even a brown person, just an Australian mid level journalist. How can this happen, he hadn't committed any crime?

I'd say he was a Woke, Leftie.

The world is a better place without these oxygen thieves.

"Terrorist thugs Antifa". He's credible then.

So assume you're ok with immigration checking your social media, personal photos etc before deciding whether to let you in?

I've got nothing to hide.

Tell me more, why are you scared, have you done something wrong?

I'd say you're the type who disapproves of CCTV cameras in public places.

Did you read the article? Obviously not, otherwise you would have seen he had done nothing wrong. He had merely written about the Columbia University protests. That is all. And they demanded he unlock a private photo folder on his phone which was very personal. Nothing else, no crime committed, just written an article about a University protest.

Is writing about a protest illegal? Nope. He'd written an article that someone didn't like. Are you ok with Customs and Border Protection acting as thought police and denying entry to people whose political opinions they don't like or who have posted things on social media the regime doesn't like? Obviously you are. I am not.

Read the article before commenting on it, it would really help you know.

Let me recommend a book for you, as it seems to fit your zeitgeist. A fellow named George Orwell put out a novel where leaders think like you, and “thought crime” is right up there with actual crime, and this “thought crime” is merely disagreeing with the official govt version of reality.

Note that to “catch” this lefty, somebody in Trump’s Carnival people regime had to monitor international media and locate those who dared to have an opinion that differs from Trump’s addled brain. Seems kind of fascist.

Perhaps you’ll have a different opinion when Democrats take over in 2026 and 2028 and use the same fascist tactics to play Big Brother and persecute anyone who dares to think differently from the official progressive narrative.

Certainly the world will be a better place without the fascist mouthbreather MAGA low IQ demographic.

Decent people should avoid visiting the USA these days unless and until the maga fascist regime is thrown on the dustbin of history.

That said, a commentator that I respect has said even in the best case scenario where that happens it will take perhaps 40 years to undo the damage.

  Forty years, lol.  Never happen.

(Stupid) Americans let the genie out of the bottle.  The authoritarian state is here to stay.

America as you remember it is over.  The fact that the Constitution could be so easily discarded by someone who is - quite frankly - an idiot tells you it wasn't worth the paper it's written on.

Well things will never be the same, that's for sure.

Immigration officials have every right to check your phone and any content on it while determining if you can enter the country or not.

Been like that for many years now in many countries.

This is where I got my comeuppance. I always operated under the (false) assumption that the majority leaned toward competence and rationality. I suspect the Founders had similar false views. That such a willfully ignorant, self-serving, wildly flawed corrupt moron could destroy what millions of smarter and more moral people spent 250 years creating was outside of my thought process. I grossly overestimated humanity as well as the strength I though the US system had at its core.

Fortunately I learn from my mistake. I now see MAGAs and know they are ignorant, insecure sheeple, easily captured and directed by someone who tells them what their insecurity needs to hear. Without naming names, I see it even on this Forum. Losers who need to feel they've gotten a win, even if it's merely a vicarious win. I will never trust the US again, nor would I ever go into harm's way to serve it, as I willfully did in the past. It is undeserving of sacrifice.

Sadly, despite its very human faults, what the US was intended to do, and what it could do to enhance the human experience, will be lost---perhaps forever---by Trump and his abject idiocy.

The greatest thing the Founders did was to create a roadmap where total human equality---under the law, not owing to skills or effort---was in reach. Life is always going to be unfair---because some are always smarter, more skilled, more athletic, better looking, more motivated--but to put out a playing field where everyone not only had basic rights (free speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of and from religion...equality under the law), but allowed people to rise to wherever their skills and ambition could take them was truly noble and novel.

Under Trump, law is dependent on ideology and how it jibes with Trump. Try to hang the VP, and "we love you very much". Be honestly critical of Trump, and get audited by the IRS, have a broadcast license pulled, or be forced to spend lots of money defending yourself from a silly, vindictive indictment. Three branches of government---the "checks and balances'--evaporate as toadies kowtow to a single autocrat wannabe. Failure to worship the idiot-in-chief is now a crime or grounds for denial of entry into the US.

You are right...the US as it was intended to be and could be is finished...and destroyed by a moron and his silly cult.

Personally I wish a test case would go to the SCOTUS.  I'm a conservative, but I must be a completely different kind of conservative than Trump or any of his cabinet.  They collectively pay lip service to the Constititution, and by their actions they have deemed that First Amendment protections don't apply to non-citizens.  I think that is a first step towards a very un-American America. Stripping the freedom of expression away from visa holders, threatening to deport naturalized Americans - very dangerous to our Constitutional protections.  Trump and crew are walking a fine line with Fascism and Totalitarianism on the far side.  It bodes not well for the US, imho.  When MAGA actually embraces Fascism, they'll start to threaten to imprison American citizens for "wrong-speak."  Unfortunately I think its coming.  And the Left is even worst.  But I don't expect if from the conservative Right, yet here we are.  America has changed in a very bad way since I was born post-WWII.

Observing from outside, I rather think that you are right. Perhaps the acid test will be what happens in the elections in a years time. If they are blocked, impeded or ignored then you are right. It will be over.
