A Thai woman crossing a Bangkok road was fatally struck by a public bus yesterday on Surawong Road. The tragic incident occurred away from a designated pedestrian crossing during heavy rain, which may have contributed to reduced visibility for the driver. The victim, 64-year-old Apinya, was trapped under the bus's right front wheel when police and emergency services arrived at the scene around 3pm.

Witnesses reported that the bus continued moving after the initial impact, possibly due to the driver’s lack of awareness. It was only after nearby motorists and bystanders shouted that he stopped the vehicle and attempted to help Apinya, who unfortunately could not be revived. Initial investigations noted the absence of a zebra crossing at the location, raising concerns about pedestrian safety in the area.

The incident involved a cream-and-red public bus number 2-2, which operates between Si Phraya Pier in Bangkok and the Pak Kret area of Nonthaburi province. Police have yet to announce potential charges or consequences the driver might face. Meanwhile, Apinya's body was taken for an autopsy by rescuers from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation.

This accident is the latest in a series of public bus incidents in Bangkok. On October 23, a collision involving bus number ปอ 39 and a truck occurred on Phahonyothin Road, leaving the bus driver and ticket staff injured. Earlier, in February, bus number 167 crashed into an electric pole cable due to an oil slick, though no injuries were reported.

Key Takeaways

  • A Thai woman was killed by a bus in a non-pedestrian crossing area in Bangkok.
  • Heavy rain likely affected the driver’s visibility, contributing to the accident.

As if pedestrian crossing are safe?

I grew up in NYC. Everybody jaywalks. No driver wants to hit you.

Wait for a moderate break in the traffic. Walk out slowly. Drivers & mocys will stop. Wait between lanes if necessary. Watch out for speeding mocys.

Many car drivers will stop politely with their hazards on.

Maybe my days are numbered but I do this every day. Carefully.
