Phuket has surpassed the rest of Thailand in tourism recovery, with tourist arrivals during the first 10 months of 2023 showing a significant year-on-year increase. By October, 4.16 million tourists flew directly to Phuket, reaching 97.5% of 2019 levels. This recovery is driven by a diverse mix of Asian and European markets, allowing hotels to maintain room rates and occupancy throughout the high season.

Looking at the broader picture, nationwide tourism as of November 10 showed a decrease in arrivals by 7.14% year-on-year, totaling 27.6 million tourists and generating 1.27 trillion baht, a 4.5% decline. Top source markets for Phuket include Russia, China, and India, with Russian arrivals leading at 832,976. The decline in the Chinese market is notable, with a 33% decrease in the first three quarters, partly due to reduced direct flights from smaller Chinese cities.

Suksit Suvunditkul, president of the southern chapter of the Thai Hotels Association, reports that Phuket's hotel occupancy last month was 75%, with an average room rate of 3,049 baht. These figures reflect growth compared to last year, with anticipated high demand from long-haul markets boosting occupancy to 77% in November and December. Despite steady high-season rates, Suksit warns of potential slight decreases as compared to 2024's strong performance.

Looking forward, the sentiment amongst hotel businesses suggests a promising rise in occupancy and sustained interest from long-haul markets across the Southern and Eastern regions. However, the nationwide decrease in Chinese tourists is expected to persist. As the tourism sector navigates these challenges, operators like Thienprasit Chaiyapatranun express cautious optimism, focusing on long-haul markets while acknowledging the struggles with traditional short-haul and ladyboy markets, which showed notable declines.

Key Takeaways

  • Phuket leads Thailand's tourism recovery with diverse markets.
  • Nationwide, tourism lags with Chinese market declines impacting figures.
  • Occupancy remains strong in Phuket, with stable room rates projected.

Get out of my head. I was about say the exact same thing except I would add the word PUSHY in front of the word Russians. They are not pleasant tourists.
