Grey Market Excise tax

Featured Replies

I've just discovered on trying to sell my car that it is a grey market car, not imported via a dealer.

Anyone an expert on grey market cars and the customs and excise duty?

I have been informed by a guy in the motor trade that before I sell it I should declare to pay excise duty of around 50k. He said if I don't then the car could be seized at the DLT when I go to transfer it or there could be a fine of up to 10 times the duty of 50k.

In the blue book page 18 when I translate using Google it says ' importd through the private port CRC Bkk, Receipt number xxxx, import duty bookKor Sor Kor 21, number Kor Nor xxxxxxx.

I thought that would mean the correct duty was paid at the time and the car has had 3 change of owners since new and never previously flagged by the DLT.

Anyone any experience of this?

One of the issues with Grey Imports is that a lot of them have been reported stolen in the UK.  IMHO, it's just a matter of time before IT systems will tie-up and identify them.

Back to your problem, I would be surprised if they hadn't paid import taxes at time of first registration, you need to find out if your car is legal, I would get a 2nd opinion from one of the import specialist tents.

If taxes haven't been paid and it's only 50k THB, I would pay it, if it's $50k, I would never sell it.
