Michelin-Starred Jay Fai Faces Service Criticism

Jay Fai, a Bangkok restaurant with one Michelin star, is under scrutiny after a local customer claimed poor treatment upon visiting. The woman reported being refused entry for arriving before her companions and was told to “mind her manners.” She urged others to reconsider supporting the establishment, highlighting an ongoing customer service issue.

Arriving at 7am to secure a place in line for the 9am opening, the woman received queue number three. However, when her turn came, she was informed she couldn’t be seated until her friends joined her. The confrontation escalated when the owner's daughter insisted she wait outside the restaurant and rejoin the queue.

The woman's complaints about the service continued after being seated at 10am, claiming staff declined a simple drink order request and treated Thai patrons less favorably than foreigners. She also remarked that the food failed to meet expectations, noting she was visiting at her friends’ urging.

In defense, the owner’s daughter clarified that the policy aims to streamline operations, avoiding delays caused by incomplete parties taking up tables. She mentioned that suspected queue-holding might have prompted her reaction, and she apologized for any discomfort caused, stressing no offence was intended.

This incident resurfaces past issues at Jay Fai, notably the August controversy where YouTuber Pitchaya “Peachii” Chaychana faced unexpected charges. Peachii’s bill was 4,000 baht for a crab omelette typically priced at 1,500 baht, which staff justified as a premium crab meat surcharge. Following that, authorities fined the restaurant 2,000 baht for unclear pricing practices.

As the restaurant continues to face public criticism, it aims to balance maintaining its policies with delivering satisfactory service. How it manages these issues may influence its reputation locally and internationally, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • A customer alleges poor service at Michelin-starred Jay Fai in Bangkok.
  • The incident brings renewed scrutiny after earlier pricing complaints.
  • The restaurant defends its queue policy aimed at service efficiency.

Possibly true !!!...    Wife (Thai) went there with friends and received a level of impoliteness and attitude from the staff that would simply have seen me walk out....

But there is also this - one friend gets there 2 hours early (up to them)...  and then others are 'privileged' and the friends take advantage - IF there the 'friends' were not their then I quite agree that the table could not be 'filled' - space should be given to others already queueing.

Seems a struggle for some to handle these things maturely !...

...and yes, I know - who wants to pay those prices for a crab-omelette anyway etc etc etc...

No matter but I am always surprised that Thai people can bring down their own businesses.. They built things up, but can't handle their success, with a result that bring their business down.. I have seen many times, that good restaurants, with nice food, suddenly started to make less delicious food, closed too many days in a week for all kind of reasons and in the end after a year they closed for ever.. My question is than why? why did you ruin your own business.. This is a similar case it seems.. She has a Michelin star, but there was already some time ago an issue , and in the comments  we can read that the service is bad .. soon maybe there will be place enough as people start to avoid her...

Her name wouldn’t be Karen would it?

Can you give us a few more details on the crabby attitude that would have triggered your dummy spit had you been there?

I didn’t think you would actually answer.

I had crab fried rice for lunch today.
Might give a crab omelette a go tomorrow.

I wonder if it would be even better with a bit of minced prawn in as well.

I do like Thai omlettes, the garlic and fish sauce make them very tasty for such a simple dish.

I got crabs in Pattaya once.

I do feel sorry for her to be honest.

I can only imagine what she has been through.

We both agree - I feel sorry for her too she's amazing and I don't deserve her.

I wish her all the best in her next life.

Now that Jay Fai is successful, the haters come out to ruffle some feathers.

That wok don't stop clanking for 12 hours.

Ignore the destructors and just keep turning out wok fried classics for the people.

Yootubers like Peachy is rolling in the dough; suck it up princess.

Premium crab meat don't grow on trees, thus the surcharge.

These days if someplace is really famous, and on many lists, I tend to avoid it. I don't want to deal with the hassle, the arrogance, the lines and all the nonsense.

In addition to that you're paying silly money for something that is available elsewhere that's nearly as good for a tenth the price.

Seems fair, you have an appointment.. best keep it.

She has been successful for a long time but if you are foolish enough  to Que at 5am to try and get a slot at 10am or whatever time  they open and then pay 2k thb plus for an omelette you can go right ahead.

A Michelin star, so what?. Go try try Nahm in outer BKK and you will see what a Michelin star stands for.

Read an article where a guy spent 7 hrs in the Que. sorry mate, time is money and the food not great

just  My opinion is all.

Wok fried classics?

Have you dined there?

I haven't.

Yes. You wouldn’t find a 60€ omelette in any of the famous local restaurants.
Classed as a breakfast or brunch / starter. No Frenchie would fall for those prices. Last year I had a perfectly wonderful Christmas dinner in a Bangkok hotel, fresh seafood, Alaskan Crab, Turkey with all the trimmings, desserts galore for 2500 Baht, wine extra of course.  With nice surroundings, waiters and even carol singers !!! No way I’d queue for an omelette.

Some people are actually attracted to ques. They will wait for hours, just because they read how great a place was, or due to the recommendation of someone online. No thanks. Time is precious.

As I have gotten older, it is becoming far easier to just say no to nonsense and hyperbole.

She received her Michelin star in 2017. Her prices have been going up ever since, but people still wait in line to eat there, so she seems to have managed success well. At over eighty years of age, she probably wouldn't care too much if she closed down now anyway.
