We went over to Koh Samet......much shorter trip I recall......boat was obviously overcrowded and they ran out of lifejackets.

Of course being British I would rather drown that complain.

Yonks ago, I used to regularly take the speedboat from Phuket to Ao Nang.  No life jackets provided - I brought my own and always wore it, much to the 'mirth' of the other passengers who apparently preferred to drown if there were an accident....

Yep....I can see that.

If I give the Thai family a lift anywhere it's kids in the back, everyone wears a safety belt.........they do it, but you can tell they think I'm weird.

All been caught by the fishermen and huge nets.

But there again I did see a pod of dolphins just around from the Lam Chabang port years ago.

Where there's dolphins there's probably sharks.

I thought I was a sissy for being afraid of getting on those boats.

Unless you want to go fishing, why would you?

to get to the islands.

So I wonder why the initial confusion that it was a tour boat? As for no mention of nationalities, if they were all fishers, then some are most likely Burmese - but they don't want to acknowledge that so they don't say. Were they headed for a bigger fishing boat (a sort of transfer of crew)?

They were all Thai’s booked on a fishing trip , which has been clarified in the updates.

The story was a developing incident, which was first posted when the initial alert was first received, victims were still in the water and multiple agencies were dealing.

You clearly never dealt with a serious emergency incident, where information is confusing, often contradictory, multiple agencies with no common communication channels and changing details, hence why updates are posted to the OP.

So instead of reading the facts in the updates, which states they were all Thai nationals, you posted a conspiracy based on nothing but your own fantasy.

Guess I misssed that. Wasn't making a comment about the report writing.

Cold too, I wonder if exposure is a danger too.

Of course it is. They were suffering from hyperthermia, according to the report. The human body runs best at 37 °C, and the surface temperature was probably mid to high 20s. After 7 hours, you will get very cold.

The most recent update said that the fishing vessel was booked for * transport * purposes between the two islands.

The larger boats plying these waters have a large sail area and a narrow beam, which can be disastrous in high winds.  The lack of freeboard makes the bilge pump crucial in rough seas.  The electrical connection to the pump (should be more than one pump)  is exposed to salt water and needs to be checked regularly.

A friend of mine and I worked on a ferry back home and took one of those 30 baht trips to Koh Lan. We were horrified at the safety standards and took a speedboat back, which wasn't much better, but at least we were above the waterline for the duration of the trip.  Back home we have to take courses and pass tests, even to be a deck hand on a boat. I have no idea how it works here. There are some decent boat handlers to be sure, but some are downright scary.

The wind today was the strongest I can ever remember in Pattaya.  Very unwise to take the ferry in these conditions. Also , some of those old wooden ferry boats look dilapidated. Good news all were rescued.

What ferry?

The ferry from Bali Hai pier to Koh Larn.

It was a fishing boat, or a boat that people had hired to go fishing. It wasn't a ferry.
