Authorities have apprehended a shop owner in Kathu district, Phuket, for illegally selling shisha and related smoking equipment near a school. The raid took place on Wednesday night in response to complaints about the vendor allegedly targeting students and the public. Police have confiscated shisha devices, tobacco, accessories, and financial records, and the shop owner now faces multiple charges.

The arrest is a result of ongoing efforts by Phuket authorities to address community safety and illegal activities. The shop owner is charged with possessing and concealing prohibited imported goods under the Customs Act, violating Consumer Protection Board regulations by selling unauthorized shisha products, and selling alcohol without a license. The raid was part of an initiative led by governor Nirat Phongsitthithawon, emphasizing maintaining social order.

Local officials have expressed concern over the sale of shisha and its impact on the community, particularly near schools. Experts warn of potential health risks associated with shisha smoking and stress the importance of protecting minors. The case highlights ongoing issues regarding the enforcement of consumer protection laws in Thailand.

As investigations continue, authorities aim to prevent similar incidents and strengthen regulatory measures. The shop owner remains in custody at the Kathu police station for further questioning. This incident underscores the need for vigilant enforcement to curb illegal activities affecting public health and safety, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Authorities conducted a raid following complaints about illegal shisha sales.
  • The shop owner faces charges under the Customs Act and consumer protection laws.
