Can stay outside Thailand for >90 days straight on Non.-Imm. O?

Featured Replies

So I've had a few Non. Imm. visas over the years, first an Ed. then the M for 8 years and now I've been on the O for a couple years.

At some point I learned that with Non. Imm. visas if you leave Thailand and don't re-enter within 90 days, the visa is canceled regardless of whether you have a 12-month extension and re-entry permit. So for ex. if I got a 12-month extension then went to UK for 5 months, I'd have to get a totally new Thai visa.

Is this wrong? Can't recall when I learned this but I could have sworn you can't leave for more than 90 days in a single stretch and keep the visa. But others on Non. Imm. O are saying no such rule exists, and actually once I have a 12-month extension and re-entry permit I could leave for as long as I wanted. But seems those others have never actually left for more than 90 days in one stretch without re-entering at all.

To be clear, I'm not asking about leaving for over 90 days total in a 12-month period. I know that's allowed. I'm asking about >90 days straight outside of Thailand.

Been searching in this site and elsewhere and can't find the answer... But these other people are adamant I'm wrong. So maybe that's the rule only for the Ed. or M visa and I wrongly assumed it applies to all Non. Imm. O visas.... Any experts out there could settle this?

Yes, that's wrong. If you have a valid re-entry permit, you can re-enter until the re-entry permit expires, regardless of it's more or less than 90 days after departing.

I know several people on retirement extensions who routinely leave Thailand for about half a year to spend time in their home country. That's not a problem at all.

If you have a long term visa you need to get a re-entry permit before you leave, otherwise your visa expires the moment you leave.

Your re-entry permit is valid till the expiry date on your visa

Yes it's wrong.

You at some point obtained a Non O visa (single entry)

That visa gives a 90 day permission of stay (a permit)

The visa is used.

You then obtain an extension (12 months) to that permission of stay.

You are not extending your visa.

To exit and reenter Thailand you can obtain a reentry permit.

Single or multiple reentry.

There are no rules as to how long you are permitted to stay out of Thailand each exit.

No limit (with multi) how many times you exit and reenter.

Obviously you need to be in Thailand when window to obtain new extension is due.

Most immigration offices you can renew up to 30 days prior to expiry 45 days at some offices eg CW, CM, Phuket.

Previously available was a Multi Entry Non O visa valid for a year.

The rules for that visa may be where OP confusion arose.

That visa is no longer available.
