How early can I apply for an extension on my visa exemption?

Featured Replies

Hi. I haven't been to Thailand in more than ten months and am planning to go to Bangkok next month to attend a short course. Two weeks after my entry on a 60-day visa exemption, I'm thinking of going to Chiang Mai for a short holiday (after which I'll be returning to Bangkok). Would it be possible to apply for a 30-day extension while in Chiang Mai and so soon after my entry? I plan to stay in Thailand for a total of 85 days with no future visits planned in 2026. I ask because I've found the immigration office at Central Festival Chiang Mai to be relatively efficient and pain free.

Thank you in advance.

Will be up to immigration office.

At some places they even at times send you away with couple of weeks till expiry and say come later.

You will need copy TM30.

In Bangkok you would attend Laksi immigration not CW.

Two weeks before the expiry of the visa exemption?

In Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket you can apply for a 30-day tourism extension when you have 45 days or less left on your existing stay.

So in Chiang Mai you would need to wait at least 15 days after your entry to apply.

You will need a TM30, so make sure wherever you decide to stay in CM will provide that for you.

Both Bangkok and Chiang Mai allow you to apply for a 30 day extension on a 60 day visa exempt or a tourist visa entry when you have 45 days or less left on your current entry stamp.

You do not lose any days applying early as the 30 day extension is added to the expiration date of your entry stamp.

Thanks all for the helpful responses. I see they're asking for the TM30 again; the officer in Chiang Mai returned mine in January this year saying it wasn't required.

I've never been to an immigration office in Bangkok. Would it be possible to go at 2 PM to this Laksi office to submit my application as my course ends at 1 every weekday? I don't mind going back the next day to pick up my passport.

Depending on how busy they are, they stop accepting queue at a certain time.  But it would probably be okay if you go during the middle of the week and not a Monday or Friday.  You can also see if they have any appointment slots available for a day you can go, which will ensure you are seen quickly.

Things must have changed since 2023 when I did my last visa exempt extension in Chiang Mai then it was within 14 days before expiration. So it is now the same as a non-o.

Whether you're being asked for a TM30 receipt is hit and miss, so you should always be prepared to show it.

Laksi can be very busy. Try to make an appointment, if you can still get one.

Or consider using the e-Extension process, which would mean that you pay 500 baht extra and make an appointment at Chaeng Watthana (not Laksi) to get your extension sticker (not stamp). A friend of mine did just that earlier this year when he was unable to book an appointment at Laksi. 500 baht well spent to avoid the outrageous queue.
