MGs are cropping up in the UK now. Do the Chinese do not realise that the British know what the MG car maker was and what ever they are now it isn't MG.

That's a good thing IMHO

As I almost didn't bother peeking at MG as the past vehicles, weren't exactly dependable.  Looked nice, but too much effort to keep them running.  SAIC fixed that eventually, for most models in a short time.

I don't know the Chinese didn't just start a completely new brand. Trying to pass these cars off as MGs is just a joke.

What do you think the MGs would have morphed into, 45 years after the demise of something like the MGB, last one produced 1980.

If you ask me, their new ragtop is a great improvement over the MGB, and you don't have to worry about it breaking down, with years of free road service, or concern yourself with the drivetrain being replaced, with that lifetime warranty.

Oh yea, let's not forget, it performs a wee bit better :cheesy:

1980 MGB ... looking nice 👍

... but ... the new (low end) MG3 HEV would run circles around it :coffee1:

MG3 HEV specs ... 194 PS (143 kW) power, 425 Nm (313 lb ft) torque, and a quick 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) ~8 sec

1980 MGB specs ...

... Engine: 1798cc (1.8L) Inline 4-cylinder.

... Power: Around 95 bhp @ 5,500 rpm (reduced from earlier chrome bumper models).

... Torque: Approx. 105-110 lb-ft.

... Carburetion: Twin SU HIF4 carbs.

... Transmission: 4-speed manual (synchromesh).

... 0-60 mph: About 14 seconds (some sources say 11.8s, reflecting earlier or tuned versions).

Top Speed: Around 104 mph.

You guys can't be serious.  Best thing that happened to MG, SAIC took over :coffee1:

SAIC didn't take over MG, they just bought the name. Why not just trade as SAIC.

If the Chinese bought Manchester United, moved the club to Beijing, replaced the players with Chinese, would it still be Manchester United?

As a non Brit I think maybe they do...

🎭 ACT II — The Unexpected Twist

Enter SAIC Motor, stage right
A swirl of LED light, a low electronic hum. The stage that once smelled of petrol now glows lithium-white.

Scene I — “The Fall of the House of Longbridge”

Scene II — “A New Shadow Approaches”

Scene III — “The Bargain”

Scene IV — “Transformation”

Scene V — “Applause Where No One Expected It”

🎭 ACT III — “Rebirth or Impostor?”
where MG under SAIC decides what kind of character it truly is.

Yes, they wanted the legality of name, dealers & distribution.   Why in the world would they continue to produce the same sub standard crap that didn't sell and why they went belly up to begin with.

That's usually what happens when someone takes over a failed company, it gets improved.

Let me think, would I rather have an MGB or a Cyberster ... :cheesy:

Or our ZS, or new S5.   Actually I like our ZS better.   I'd take the MG3 HEV over a MGB, and that's a pretty low bar, a HEV 🙄

As stated many times, I wouldn't own another ICEV.  Most BEV owners on AN, seem to think the same.

@KhunLA Hyjacking a topic just because you are crazy about chinese cars is not the nicest thing to do. I was hoping for more info on how to buy a perticular kind of car and so far unfortunately nobody has any idea.

Just countering those providing a bit of misinformation, that may sway an ignorant person to not look at all the options.

You got some decent info from some folks.  You asked the impossible, wanting cars not readily available here, which, you already knew.

Just decide what specs you need, your price point, and compare specs, before wasting your time at dealers, kicking tires.

Obviously I'm a BEV fan, or at least something with electric motors for better performance.  But bang for baht, performance & warranty, it's hard to ignore the list I originally posted.   Whether BEV, HEV, PHEV or even ICEV.

MG & BEV fan obviously.   If hell bent on ICEV, then Toyota Corolla Cross is quite nice, and if BEV weren't available in TH, I'd be test driving that first.

If the Cross is out of your budget, and still want ICE, then I'd take a peek at these 2 ...

... I'm familiar with both, the ZS (ICEV) I even owned, and loved it.
