Do you have a fence around your house?

Featured Replies

To those who live in the isaan area

Quick question do you have fence around your house ?

I watched a YouTube video of a farang saying Thai people wander into his yard to "look" around

Also is there many "break ins" in your area ?

My wife and family want fence, but we have a huge land, and no, I do not want anything more to maintain or use money on, so we do not have fence around the land, but we made a compromise, we have gate and one side fenced for some reason.

We have dogs who guards the land, and we never leave the farm without one who stays there. So basically there is people at our farm 247/7. yes there is looting and thefts in the area.

We had false police coming and asking what we had for security etc, but they never came out of the car, because my dog standing next to my mother in law. And when asked what guard we had for the night, she said we let lose the other dogs. My dog looks scary and why they didnt come out, so they just imagine the other dogs I guess.

2 house had/have 2+ meter wall (no holes) for privacy and 'try' to keep snakes out.   First house, 3 meter in some sections.

1 house (2nd), on 2 rai, too expensive for wall, plus not needed for privacy, though did eventually have natural wall, but also, lots of snakes because no wall.   Only had wall on visible corner of property, giving the illusion, the lot was completely walled :coffee1:

Only first house had issue of people wandering on property, and theft a real issue.   Solved with wall.  I consider a wall mandatory in TH.  If urban area, theft is a problem, if rural, snakes are definitely an issue.

I do a recon every morning at house before letting dog out, and she's not in the yard, unless we are.

It's good to have a fence to keep people and dogs out.

Also in general, it's good for keeping young kids & dogs inside too.
| definitely wouldn't want to have either without a fence, it'd be a constant worry.

As for burglars, I've never really been too concerned but then my mother in law's shop has been burgled multiple times this year, by different people.  We caught them on CCTV, and got them sent to jail, but it rocks your feeling of safety a bit I think, knowing that someone might be trying to break in and steal stuff.  Especially as the ones who break in were all trying to feed drug habits.

I have been wearing a chastity belt for the last 20 years. Never felt the urge for more "fencing".

snakes can climb your gates....

We have a fence. It helps if you paint it the same colour as the house, and grow trees alongside away from the house

We have one Ria simple 2m above ground concrete posts with barb wire, and green shade cloth about 1 to 1.5 meter high along it. cheap and cheerful.....:coffee1: stops dogs except mine getting in or out he just dug a way under it, he likes to socialize and go to barbeques, but he always stays in our small soi, he will appear if anyone comes though.

Walls and fences are great for keeping dogs and chickens out .People too,but maybe I've been lucky I ve never had issues with theft or trespassing here

At our place in Rayong we have high walls, and six dogs. Prior to that people wandered in looking for anything they could steal or eat.

We mostly have a barbed-wire fence but we used concrete rails next to our pond because the local villagers were concerned that somebody might drive off the road and drown.

The purpose of our fence is to keep local cattle off our land.  Before we bullt the house the local farmers were happy to let their cattle wander on our land becuase we had lots of green foliage for them to eat.

Our house is a bungalow but is one metre above ground so we're not too fussed about snakes and other creepy crawlies.  We weren't interested in a high wall because we've got nothing to hide, and no wish to be seen to try to do so.  Also, with a 400 metre boundary fence on the two sides that we needed to erect a fence, it would have been eye-wateringly expensive to build a wall.

To answer your other questions:

a) We don't know what crime is here.  Everyone knows everyone here.  We leave the keys in the motorbikes all the time because then we don't have to search for them when we want to use them, and the house is never locked.

b) No, people don't wander onto our land to look around.

p.s. these photos are old; the house is almost complete now.

Barb wires next to the road, bad for people and bad for animals, and should only be used on the top of a higher fence if ever used.

No fence or bungalow built one meter up or 10 for that sake will prevent for snakes. Where it is people, there is rodents, and where there is rodents, there is snakes, and there is snakes thats follow snakes because they eat snakes.

There is higher density of snakes in the cities and villages than there is out in the jungle  😉

Almost every piece of land with a fence here uses barbed wire.  It's customary in these parts.

Well, is it more useful than harmful thats the question. As long it is maintained, it is ok, but at once it is left in the bushes it survives for 100 years if not more.

It is an easy and cost effective solution thats true, but

anyway, picking out people from the fence if a motorbike with three kids on it crashes in to it next to the road would maybe make you responsible?
