Trump Announces New Thailand-Cambodia Ceasefire

In a significant diplomatic move, the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to renew a ceasefire following several days of deadly clashes. US President Donald Trump made the announcement on social media after speaking with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. The renewed truce aims to halt all shooting and adhere to the original peace accord facilitated by Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

An escalation in cross-border violence threatened the original ceasefire that Malaysia brokered in July. Despite the initial agreement, Thailand and Cambodia engaged in a propaganda war and minor skirmishes persisted. The conflict stems from long-standing territorial disputes related to a 1907 map drawn during Cambodia's French colonial period, which Thailand disputes.

Recent escalations saw Thailand employing jet fighters against military targets, while Cambodia used BM-21 rocket launchers, which damaged residential areas near the border. Thailand also reported destroying a crane at the Preah Vihear temple site, suspected of housing Cambodian military equipment. The renewed ceasefire seeks to avert further escalation of a more significant conflict between the two countries, reported AP via Thai Newsroom.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to renew a ceasefire amid border clashes.
  • US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim played key roles in the negotiation.
  • The conflict has historical roots in a disputed 1907 map during Cambodia's French colonial period.

  • Good intentions but the ceasefire holding is a long shot as it was originally. Of course this thread will rapidly descend into anti-Trump rants.

BubbleG stay safe . . .  I'm guessing you're in Isaan. I'm in Chanthaburi and have heard about 6 am, what I'm sure is fighter jets to the South.

Generally, good luck to Trump. I hope his intervention helps.

We are 60kms from the border (as the crow flies) and we still hear rumbling from the same areas where we have been hearing it for the last couple of days, but I must say a lot less then previously

When my wife comes back from the temple *buddha day today* I will have her call her Uncle who lives near one of the disputed border crossings and he refuses to leave because of his cattle.

MJCM - Isaan ?

I guess Cambodia is about 60km south of here but much less to the West, over the mountains. Take care and GL to 'Uncle' . . . .

I am in Buriram.

Ban Kruat / Lahan Sai, where there has been heavy fighting is a straight line down from us.

Thanks

you're wrong. It's all true. The fact that fighting continues (to what extent?) can mean a few things like there's a set time for the renewal of the ceasefire (not mentioned in the article) and that time hasn't been reached yet, minor skirmishes continue or it's being ignored completely. Let's see what happens and hope for the best.

  • Popular Post

Apparently there's bombing of Cambodia in areas S and E of Trat. Interesting to note that note here earlier, Thailand has 122 Fighter aircraft compared to Cambodia, 0 (none).

Let's hope that ceasefire ain't too long in coming !

No anti Trump rant from me,

Hopefully FIFA don’t withdraw their heavily coveted peace price either.

I agree on some of the article but the cease fire is typical Trump BS. I guess you don't follow Thai news.

My patriotic Thai wife assured me that Thailand would never release propaganda. She has these sort of brain farts every week but I really admire her as she always strives for a personal best.

"that ambiguous border also affects maritime lines. "

I don't understand this.

How does the border ambiguity affect maritime lines?

Isn't this an inland border?

Someone rumoured the Thailand-Cambodia tension was making the Trat islands (Koh Chang, Koh Kood) less fully booked than on previous years. Is there any truth in this?

UPDATE
PM Anutin Says Thailand Will Continue Military Actions

image.jpeg

Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Saturday morning that the country will continue military operations, signalling an escalation in the ongoing conflict and underscoring that hostilities are not the result of an accident. In a post on Facebook, he stated that Thailand would act until it no longer faces harm or threats to its land and people, adding that the country’s actions earlier in the day had already demonstrated its position. The remarks prompted heightened concern over security along affected areas and indicated that military activity would persist.

The statement follows a period of rising tension between Thailand and Cambodia, during which both sides have reported incidents along the border. Officials have previously described the situation as volatile, with armed engagements and countermeasures taking place. Against this backdrop, Anutin’s message sought to clarify the government’s stance and reject any suggestion that recent events were accidental.

In his post, Anutin wrote: “It’s definitely not a roadside accident. Thailand will continue to perform military actions until we feel no more harm and threats to our land and people. I want to make it clear. Our actions this morning already spoke.” The message was shared publicly on his Facebook account and accompanied by the hashtags #ThailandCambodia, #Anutin and #ไทยกัมพูชา. The wording emphasised resolve and framed the military response as necessary for national security.

Security analysts said the language used suggests a firm posture aimed at deterrence, while regional observers noted the potential for further instability if the situation remains unresolved. Public reaction online was mixed, with some users expressing support for the government’s stance and others voicing concern about the risks of prolonged conflict. Diplomatic channels have not yet commented publicly in response to the post.

Khoasod reported that attention will focus on whether further official statements clarify the objectives and limits of the military actions. Observers will also watch for any moves towards dialogue or de-escalation, alongside developments on the ground. For now, the prime minister’s comments indicate that Thailand is preparing for continued operations until it assesses that threats have ended.

Key Takeaways

• Prime Minister Anutin said on Saturday morning that Thailand will continue military actions until threats end.

• The statement rejects claims that recent events were accidental and cites actions taken earlier that day.

• The comments signal continued tension in the Thailand–Cambodia situation with uncertain next steps.

does Trump think Anutin is in charge of the Thai military?

Trump is doing this for his own reasons of face, at least on the one hand. In any case, he either misunderstands his long-time-ally's intentions or game plan in this conflict (e.g. military's domestic politics, rather than only a border demarkation), and it raises the question why he is being chummy with Cambodia, China's long-time proxy in the region, at Thailand's expense? Is it part of game plan to ease tensions with China? Or is it just to show he's a peace maker? I dunno. I'm pretty certain he's not going to pull Cambodia away from China and into the US sphere ..

Oooh your eloquent, witty, and may I say, charming response point to a very well read man. Hopefully you also understand sarcasm.

When someone lies so often and so consistently it gets to the point where their word means nothing anymore. Trump will do or say anything to score immediate points and the man has a completely bizarre relationship with truth and reality.

Fighting between Thai and Cambodian forces continued early on Saturday hours after US President Donald Trump said the two countries had agreed to a ceasefire.

Thai prime minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he told the US president a ceasefire would only be possible after Cambodia had withdrawn all its forces and removed landmines.

"Thailand will continue to perform military actions until we feel no more harm and threats to our land and people. I want to make it clear. Our actions this morning already spoke," he said on social media.

Shelling continued overnight, as Thai forces push to take a number of vantage points along the border. At least 21 people have died in the renewed fighting and 700,000 have been evacuated on both sides.
