A 25-year-old man was shot dead by his uncle following a dispute while the pair were fishing and drinking alcohol in Khon Kaen province, with police arresting the suspect at the scene on the evening of 12 December 2025. The shooting occurred at a hut at the edge of a village in Kok Si subdistrict, Mueang district, leaving the victim dead from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

 

Police from Mueang Mai station said they received a report of a shooting and rushed to the location with senior officers, forensic staff, medical personnel and rescue workers. The victim was found lying beside a fire with a gunshot wound to the left side of the chest, while the suspect, identified as 56-year-old Samart, the victim’s uncle, remained at the scene and surrendered to officers.

 

According to the suspect’s statement, he and his nephew had earlier gone together to pump water and catch fish to prepare an evening meal. They later bought white liquor and drank together at the hut before the situation escalated at around 21.30, when an argument broke out between them.

 

Samart told police he had warned his nephew about his behaviour, but claimed the younger man did not listen and moved towards him in a threatening manner. He said he was physically smaller and felt at a disadvantage because his nephew was much larger, prompting him to grab a long homemade gun that was hanging from a tree and fire a single shot from a distance of about two metres.

 

After the shooting, Samart said he called for an ambulance, but his nephew later died from his injuries at the scene. Police seized the long homemade gun as evidence and took Samart into custody for questioning.

 

Officers confirmed the body was sent for a post-mortem examination as part of the investigation. Samart has been formally charged with causing another person’s death and with carrying a firearm and ammunition in a public place, offences that will be pursued under the law.

 

Khoasod reported that investigators said they will continue questioning the suspect and gathering evidence, including forensic results and witness statements, to support the legal process. The case will proceed through the justice system, with further decisions to be made following the completion of the investigation and autopsy findings.
