E-wallets Thailand that can be topped up with Wise, Revolut

Featured Replies

Are there currently any E-wallets for foreigners without a thai bank account that can be topped up with wise or other cc without bad exchange rate or other commisions to use prompt pay?

Thanks!

Nope, which is why they are all basically useless as far as I'm concerned.  Unlike the PI where GCash and MayaPay are not only e-wallets but also actual bank accounts that you can top up with Wise and link to ATM cards to take out cash.

Yes Google wallet, i use at Lotus and Big C, not widely accepted, i link a wise virtual card along with a UK bank credit card

Yes...

...but they have limitations. Moreta e-wallet allows Wise payments but it only allows payments to merchant QR codes, so you won't be able to pay the food street stall etc.

You'll find there are other e-wallets with a similar setup.

Obviously Google Wallet is not what you're looking for since that in no way holds money in itself, it simply converts the phone into a system to pay with credit cards or virtual credit cards that are not in your direct possession. But it is certainly a solution, although it has its limits; at many merchants, there is a minimum 200 baht payment requirement, and obviously many street stores etc do not have the technology.

I recall another e-wallet coming along which overcomes this issue but as I have Thai bank accounts it didn't stay in my mind. But be patient.

It is also possible to overcome this problem with your e- wallets from other countries. This will depend on your legal residence and your citizenship etc, but for example the AliPay App would certainly solve all your problems as would the Malaysian pay 'n' go App.

I strongly suggest you checking out the Malaysian App since I believe it is easy to register with and could be used by you even if you have no connection with Malaysia.

Correction: The Malaysian app I am thinking of is "touch 'n' go". The "pay and go" app does actually exist but that is not the one with the potential for use with Wise.

Apparently to use it you have to use a Malaysian Wise bank account created within your Wise account. You then have to pay the money via Duit transfer into your touch 'n' go account. And then you have to test to see if that Malaysian e-wallet will work in Thailand.

You can see that this is laborious and full of possible obstacles.

So the same as just using the credit card directly with an additional step and middleman.  I guess being able to use a Wise virtual card is one advantage, but not a very compelling one imo.

Moretta looked kind of interesting at first, until I started looking into the fees/spreads.  They are not very transparent about it either, so it took me awhile to figure that out.  I believe they only accept USD currency so you can't use Wise for the exchange either.

It will be a more interesting option to me if they ever offer more than just QR code payments.  I'm not going to pay them a bunch of fees and spreads on the exchange just for that.

@all Thanks for your responses! I am aware of the google wallet and use it. The main benefit of the google wallet is to use virtual cards and not have to give out cc data, even if you use a physical card in the google wallet.

Main problem with google wallet remains that a lot of shops (legit massage places for example) do not accept any kind of credit card or charge 3% extra. Sometimes not even 7/11 worked with my google wallet 2 years ago. Will try moreta

I use Moreta Pay, which is free to top up with SEPA for amounts over 250 USD or something in that region. Unfortunately it can only be used with business QR codes. Then I use DeepPocket, which I charge via my Thai gf. They charge 2%. Of course when I send money to my girlfriend with Wise, that also costs me about 1%, so overal I end up paying about 3%. If I can, I always pay with my Wise debit card though.
