Winter Solstice 2025: Longest Night Marks Seasonal Shift

The Winter Solstice in Thailand on December 21, 2025, will bring the longest night of the year, lasting approximately 12 hours and 41 minutes, impacting the Northern Hemisphere with the onset of winter while the Southern Hemisphere welcomes summer. The solstice will cause the sun to rise at the farthest southeast point and set at the farthest southwest, resulting in the shortest daylight duration. For instance, Bangkok will experience a sunrise at 06:36 AM and sunset at 05:55 PM, totaling just 11 hours and 19 minutes of daylight.

This astronomical event is a direct consequence of Earth's axial tilt of 23.5 degrees, influencing seasonal variations as different parts of the world receive varying sunlight angles. This tilt causes the sun to rise and set at different points throughout the year, leading to longer days in summer and longer nights in winter. The Winter Solstice is one of four key solar events, along with the Vernal Equinox, Autumnal Equinox, and Summer Solstice.

Experts point out that these solstices and equinoxes serve as natural reminders of the Earth's orbital characteristics and how they define climatic and daylight patterns. As societies prepare for the changing seasons, cultural and traditional celebrations often accompany this period, highlighting its significance across different cultures.

Looking forward, as the Earth continues its orbit, days will gradually begin to lengthen after the Winter Solstice. The next notable solar event will be the Vernal Equinox, marking the start of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, signifying a closing of the winter chapter and the anticipation of longer, warmer days, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • The Winter Solstice on December 21, 2025, is the longest night of the year.
  • Earth's tilt results in varying daylight, impacting global seasons.
  • Days will lengthen following the solstice, leading to the Vernal Equinox.

Always organised a barbeque and party with friends for the winter solstice in Oz (22 June) to welcome the coming summer. Does not seem the same here so might just have a few quiet beers.

A few things I miss from living in Europe (or Canada in my childhood) is certain food in abundance and cheap, certain drinks and the long summer nights. Don't miss the short winter days or the cold that comes with it.

Winter Solstice 2025: Longest Night Marks Seasonal Shift

Season changed about three or four weeks ago. It use to be late October. For several years now it's late November.

Dark at 4pm and dawn around 7am - and freaking cold.  I don't miss that at all.

I'm not a fan of this time of the year.
