Seeking solace at Temple

Featured Replies

Its often been claimed that anyone can sleep and eat at a Temple for free of they are down on their luck .

Is that true or is it a  myth ?

I expect it has happened previously when Monks are sympathetic and  have a spare bed for the night .

But can anyone just walk into any temple and stay and eat for free ?

Anyone ever done it

I am of the opinion that it wouldn't be possible .

Have you ever even seen a homeless person hanging round  a Temple ?

The could be an  off chance you would be allowed to stay , but it would be unlikely

i dont think they will host a room or bed, but the food that has been offered is for anyone so inclined

they are given money by people who can't afford to, let's hope they do allow people to stay briefly

How did you know that the cyclists were sleeping at the Wat for free?

They might accommodate.

Food, yes. But private room is doubtful, maybe some common dormitory  type area?

if they did, then why are there homeless thais ?

i once had an old lady asking if she could sleep on my terrass, my then gf declined

For the same reason many homeless people in other countries choose not to use Homeless Shelters...they don't like following rules. On the street they can drink, smoke, use drugs, and I've even seen a little fornication now and then. A shelter or dorm-style setting puts a damper on their fun and freedom.

Because I watched farlang touring cyclists videos and they said so!

Could you post the videos up ?

Yes, I can't be arsed because:

1. I've watched the videos during recent years - particularly pre-covid when bike touring in Thailand was very popular - so I don't recall which videos out of the many videos I've watched,

2. You're not really interested in which videos, more about doubting my word, so I repeat it's up to whether you believe me or not.

To reiterate, I have seen videos where tourists have stayed in wats free of charge, and even been given snacks, water, etc by the monks.

Yes, there are some Wats that offer accommodation , for meditation and to sample Wat life . Wat stayers are expected to offer a donation to pay their costs .

There are SOME Wats that offer that service  .

But, we are talking about homeless people turning up at any Temple and staying there for free .

   Two different things

The topic is "Seeking solace at Temple" (not exactly a clear title), the opening post, states "Its often been claimed that anyone can sleep and eat at a Temple for free of they are down on their luck .

Is that true or is it a  myth ?

I expect it has happened previously when Monks are sympathetic and  have a spare bed for the night .

I simply advised that I have "Seen lots of farlang bike tourists do it at both wats and police stations". The Monks provide areas where tourists (homeless) can sleep, put up tents if they have one, shower, etc.

According to my wife (thai), Thai nationals can request and will get a place to eat, sleep, shower, etc, in Wats and even police stations.

Your post questions have now been answered.

So anyone can turn up at any Temple in Thailand and stay there ?

That was the question that I was asking .

Can  any homeless person walk into any Temple and get fed and be given a room to stay in ?

Yes, I did read it .

She answered about Thai Nationals .

Can you ask her what about non Thais ?

Can  any homeless person walk into any Temple and get fed and be given a room to stay in ?

I don't understand you!

I answered about non- Thais = yes

My wife answered about Thais = yes

In other words, ANY person can...

Hope that is now clear enough for you.

You answered about tourists staying in Wats

Some Wats offer that service .

Some Wats do allow people to stay .

But I did ask whether that's universal or just select few Wats

I answered about farlangs who are non-thai, not tourists.

According to my wife it is ALL wats, but I doubt it extends to some of the large tourist attracting central bkk wats.

Yes, I was going to ask in that thread, but I thought that I would start new thread

Can felangs stay indefinitely in Wats and do they do TM30's ?

Are they required to work and if so, how many hours a day work are required ?

Are working visas provided ?
