Excellent series — very binge worthy.
The plot of the Russians trying to install the nepo son of a billionaire real estate developer as the leader of a world power—feels like I’ve seen that movie somewhere before.
Thanks Will!

Gave it 15 minutes, just too unrealistic for me, watched the doco Salisbury Poisonings instead about real Russian spies.

Thanks for the heads-up @Will27 . Looks like it might be good.

Something different...ill definitely watch this.

Give this a thumbs up.👍

Watched episode 1, really dull soap, no horror at all.

In recent days I have watched......"The Untouchables" with Sean Connery, Al Pacino, Kevin Costner and Robert de Niro and really enjoyed it again and also a movie from way back called, "The Wicker Man" which I hadn't appreciated the first time round, decades ago, but got the message this time!!

One which I can recommend is a Norwegian film called, "The Gold Run", based on a true story about a group of everyday citizens who managed to hide and transport Norway's gold reserves when they were invaded by Germany. It is in Norwegian with large easy to read English sub titles, and is very good IMO.

Yes I have watched them, thank you and thought the first one better than the second.

Thanks, Will.
Watched episode 1 of the Man on Fire series last night

Starts strong and grounded like the original, then goes over-the-top and loses the realism.

Feels more like a Marvel comic than what made the original movie work.

Not sold.

Was it promoted as a horror series?

Because there are so many streaming service out there, there is a lot of mediocre stuff being made these days.

Seems to be more about quantity over quality.

Lots of mediocre stuff but it's still the golden age if TV as there's lots of great stuff being made too. All the streaming services have at least a few worth watching (and lots not...) so the problem is too much to watch. The problem will be when the streaming services start to consolidate and the amount of content being generated will diminish.

Just finished the 1st series of "The Jury"... https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0297571/

[I expected this to turn into a picture link to the series]

Really enjoyed it, felt like a Jimmy McGovern series (it wasn't) for anybody whos a fan of Jimmy (I am :) ).

Only blocked on Chrome, probably works in Opera.

They often block the popular browsers, not the website.

I have a free VPN called Browsec. I set it to Singapore so I can access TPB. When the download begins, I switch off the VPN and feel I am getting a faster DL speed.

Yer 1 person taking the world is a bit far fetched--but you can put them in sensitive positions--like owners of newspapers and Lords, if you have a big fat envelope and some one like Boris in charge of the country-----

Evgeny Lebedev, son of former KGB agent Alexander Lebedev, is a Russian businessman and newspaper proprietor (Evening Standard, Independent) appointed to the UK House of Lords in 2020 by Boris Johnson. Now known as Lord Lebedev of Hampton and Siberia, his appointment faced scrutiny over security concerns

I got the message too, and can see what Peter Sellers and Rod Stewart saw in Britt Ekland.

Watched the first episode "Man on Fire". I enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendations!

I seem to be hooked on Michael Caine movies at the moment, so when I saw another one of his on BBC iPlayer, called "Get Carter" (which I had seen decades ago) I thought I'd have another look at it and to be honest, I didn't go much on it!

I thought the plot was a bit confusing and seemed to lose itself somewhere near the end.

I was tempted to watch, "Tinker,Tailor, Soldier Spy" again, but gave it a miss for another time.

And I did watch one with Daniel Radcliffe in it, called, "The Lady in Black" and although it wasn't that highly rated on IMDb, I thought his acting was good and the plot was understandable and the ending just needed a bit of thought around it!!

It can be worse: Stallone did a remake of it.

I watched "Bugsy", 1991 with Warren Beatty and Annette Benning on Netflix and liked it, though I wish it had been a bit more serious. 7/10

Was Annette Benning not one of the hottest women of the decade?

Also saw "Reagan" (also Netflix) and liked it, if a bit sappy. Quaid trying do the voice was painful. 6/10

On the second season episode of "Man on Fire", are the wheels falling off or is it just me?

Yes, fixed it

Binge watching The Bill. It ran from 1984 to 2010 in the UK. I had never seen it before, but my friends who had watched it when they were kids liked it. I can see why they were right. A bit moralistic at times, but the characters are likeable.

I watched Derry Girls again on my last long haul flight. Wonderful writing and characters.

Also watched Dunkirk for the umpteenth time on my flight. Kenneth Branagh as Commander Bolton was inspiring. Christopher Nolan is a brilliant director. It's a beautiful, poignant film that shows the courage and heroism of the people of UK at the time.

Finally got around to watching Bugonia. Have it on a NAS but saw it on a plane. Well worth watching. I see why it was nominated for best picture in the academy awards. The ending was somewhat predictable but it didn't detract from the entertainment value.

Just watched "Ready or not 2", usual bloodbath, entertaining in parts.

Buffy just looked old!

So did 'Pope' from Animal Kingdom, playing her brother.

I’ve been watching the British movie The Zone of Interest (2023) and paired it with a scene from Orson Welles’ F for Fake (1973). which was produced 50 years earlier.

One line captures both perfectly:

“What the viewer is going to see plays inside his or her own mind.”

That’s not a side effect—it’s the mechanism.

Orson Wells (1973).png

Most films tell you:

  • what to see

  • what to feel

  • what it means

The Zone of Interest does the opposite.

No explicit violence.
No emotional guidance.
No clear narrative arc.

Instead:

“Here is a situation—now you complete it.”

The real film happens in your head.

You:

  • imagine what’s behind the wall

  • interpret symbols (the house, the garden, the fur coat)

  • connect it to your own knowledge and world

Two viewers can watch the same film—and see something entirely different.

So when your mind goes to:

  • stolen goods

  • profit at others’ expense

  • modern parallels

  • systems vs. individuals

That’s not a distraction.

That is the film.

The trade-off:

  • If it clicks → it’s deeply unsettling

  • If it doesn’t → it feels slow, empty, even boring

The Zone of Interest doesn’t show horror.
It
activates it inside you.

Welles was already playing this game in F for Fake:

storytelling blurs truth and fiction

And this film pushes it further:

meaning isn’t given—it’s constructed by the viewer

That’s art-house cinema at its core.

If you find films about the trial of Oscar Wilde interesting, you'll likely be interested in this.

In 1920 there was a "trial" at Harvard investigating and punishing ga y students there.

The full record was discovered in this century, and this film brings the trial to life with excellent acting by contemporary Harvard students.

It's a fascinating slice of life revealing the social attitudes and conditions of that era.

You can watch it on youtube,

This Is a Bomb: The Nevada Casino Heist

1,000 lbs of dynamite, a $3 million ransom, a casino facing destruction - and as the FBI races against the clock, each step reveals dark secrets. An outrageous true crime saga.

First episode of 3 episode season 1 is dropping now. Why the BBC is doing a US heist drama is questionable but I'm sure fans of BBC crime dramas will like it.

Just finishing The Americans S1. Highly recommend this far.

The BBC has produced shows from other countries for years.
