Lost Ladies (2023)

It’s Indian, but no Bollywood tripe. I’m posting about it here because I think the Thai ladies might appreciate it: the arcane aspects of a foreign (non-Occidental) country’s marital traditions (arranged marriage, dowry (can’t you hear them right now saying “what? lady have to pay!??”), with a peek at police corruption. Also, if you traveled India on your own this movie shows the place as you’d see it, no Bombay high-rise apartments, houses that look like palaces etc. I especially liked the parts with the people who live at the railway station.

Hopefully there are Thai subtitles for it somewhere.

I'm waiting for the absurdity to go full-cycle: Elliot Page plays a gay man in a romance movie, torrid love scenes etc, and wows the critics, wins every possible award, becomes the signature role of her his career.

In "Solomon and Sheba" (1959) Gina Lollobrigida played the queen of an African country. Not Black, not even Sicilian! 😀 (a little bit of intra-Italian humor there).

I didn't know the Spartans had midget warriors.

I'm waiting for all the racist bigots to die off so this isn't an issue anymore. What does it matter what skin color an actor has if they're good at the part they're cast for.

If you're going to make a movie, based on famous, well known writing like 'Odyssey', then you should try to stick to the book a bit, or call it something else.

Like they did with the movie 'Troy', based on another of Homer's writings, and smartly avoided calling it 'The Iliad', since having a few majorchanges.

Good luck in getting Liam Neeson cast as Martin Luther King.

When a 155cm (5' 1"), 50 kilo (100lb) transexual is playing a Spartan warrior, that stretches the limits of credibility.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch.

Nebraska, Pink Cadillac, Insidious 1-2, The Longest Yard, Jurassic World- Rebirth, Shelter, Philomena, The Hours, Indiana Jones-Temple of Doom, The Exorcist.

Yea, back on, and finally got around to watching 'The Agency' and good. Ended on a cliff hanger, sort of, and no S3 planned.

Also watched Dutton Ranch, and a long way to get to just OK last couple eps. Hope S2 picks up the action a little bit. Really has nothing to do with Yellowstone or Marshalls, and personally not getting the cowboy thing, as boring as hell.

Those were postponed watching by 5 seasons of 'Falling Skies' (2011), that turned out better than expected. If like 'Walking Dead' type series, I don't, so says a bit, that I made through to S5.

It's UFO aliens instead of zombies. OK, especially since I was running out of things to kill time with.

Homeland, loved that series. I still hope they do not make another spin-off. I am starting to get bored with the same old stories being reproduced again and again.

Elizabeth Taylor played Cleopatra, Katherine Hepburn played a Chinese women in Dragon Seed, Boris Karloff played the Chinese Fu Manchu, Peter Lorre played the Japanese secret agent Mr Moto, Scarlett Johansson played Major Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell, Carey Mulligan played the Costa Rican wife of Leonard Bernstein, Warner Oland, a Swede and Sidney Tolar, an American, played Charlie Chan (in yellowface no less). I could go on and on.

You forgot about all the people that played Indians in cowboy movies, and way too funny.

Ones above, all before my time, and actor's guild had to go with what they had.

Only one I can comment on, is Johansson in 'Ghost in a Shell', and had nothing to do with ethinic background, but a actor that could actually bring in the money. Which she did, and not sure any other lead could.

Didn't watch it mysleft, even as a torrent, as not my thing.

Back to Odyssey, if anything, Page & Nyong'o's casting would keep me from wanting to see it. Seems like another long boring movie to me, and can't see myself watching. Waste of more than a few talented actors.

Instead of watching "The Hunt for the Wilderpeople" last night I opted for an earlier, or even the first New Zealand movie starring Sam Neill, called, "Sleeping Dogs" and I was not impressed, despite the write up on IMDb stating it was a "landmark" movie for New Zealand – – and it may have been in one respect inasmuch as it was the first "major" movie shot completely in NZ, however it was, IMO, short on so many other aspects.

For me there was no action/excitement/tension of any note and the actors, especially Ian Mune, were very wooden, and it seemed a little disjointed at times! I suppose I could have been spoiled by all of the high action and slick Hollywood movies, and the only thing that pleased me was being able to see some great New Zealand scenery and some old towns and NZ houses!

It's a small sample size, but the ratings on IMDB (6.6) seem to reflect that.

One hour special

Was deleting Widows Bay from my NAS after watching it. Definitely won't download a second season if they have one.

While there I noticed a series downloaded in 2019 that I hadn't watched yet called The Widow. Quite good.

Thanks for the heads-up @Hummin . Jimmy is one of my favourites.

Just watched 'Those who wish me dead' on Netflix (available on HBO, Amazon Prime etc). 2021 movie starring Angelina Jolie, Nicholas Hoult and Aiden Gillan. IMDb rating 6/10. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021) is an action-thriller directed by Taylor Sheridan, based on Michael Koryta's 2014 novel. It follows a traumatized smokejumper who must protect a young boy from ruthless assassins while surviving a massive forest fire
