Bangkok–Isaan High-Speed Rail Delayed One Year by Land Disputes

Thailand's groundbreaking high-speed rail project, the Bangkok–Nakhon Ratchasima line, is now confirmed to be delayed by a year due to land expropriation and overlapping infrastructure projects. The anticipated service, initially set for 2029, is now expected to commence in 2030. This setback arises largely from complications with the high-speed rail’s interface with the three-airport rail link and unresolved land acquisition challenges.

The high-speed rail project features a 250.77-kilometre line with a mix of elevated and at-grade tracks, crossing through scenic landscapes like the Muak Lek and Lam Takhong areas. The Thai government has invested 179.413 billion baht for Phase 1, which has seen 50% completion across its 14 construction contracts. Several sections are complete, but contracts such as Contract 4-1 and Contract 4-5 remain stalled due to overlapping projects and proximity to Ayutthaya Historical Park.

Significant challenges include Contract 4-1's overlap with the three-airport rail link project, requiring renegotiation with concessionaire Asia Era One Co. Meanwhile, Contract 4-5's delay is due to necessary design modifications to comply with Unesco guidelines. In addition to these, the project has faced intricate engineering challenges due to the terrain and environmental management, while land expropriation issues have hindered progress.

Looking ahead, officials are optimistic that lessons from Phase 1 will accelerate Phase 2, the Nakhon Ratchasima-Nong Khai section, given its less challenging terrain. When complete, the rail project will feature stunning routes, including tunnels like Lam Takhong, and it forms part of a collaborative effort with China. Despite bureaucratic hurdles, the initiative remains crucial for enhancing Thailand’s transport network, reported the Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thailand's Bangkok–Nakhon Ratchasima high-speed rail is delayed to 2030.

  • Land issues and overlapping projects are the primary causes of delay.

  • Phase 2 is expected to progress faster due to fewer geographical challenges.

So they didn't buy the land 1st just starting building the line? Not exactly forward planning or even thinking 🤔

Give it to the Thais for a sure f***-up; some pockets still to be lined and incapable to manage basics.

I am not particularly fond of the Chinese but their proof of ability is manyfold. The latest is the start of building a railway across Laos with mountains, valleys, rivers and what-have-you-not. In 2016 they said, that the first train will run from Kunming to Vientiane on 2 December 2021.

Guess what, the first train ran on 2 December 2021 without interruption ever since.

So, maybe, the semi-divine Khon Thai will have to start to understand, that there are things where Thailand is best. Likewise there are things, where Thailand is not Number One and then, in the interest of people, money and need, they might resort to more professional execution and this project here is certainly not in Thailand's best abilities.

So bidding was done, contracts signed but the land is still under negotiation ?

The contrast between China and Thailand on this particular project is enough to make one desire a commie government.

But the picture of the high-speed train, which is not likely ever to be seen chugging along in LoS before 2049, indicates that Thai business leaders at least have a sense of humour.

I doubt they are dealing with farmers on the land. Sounds like speculators bought from the farmers and are holding the railroad company to ransom.

Optimism is one of Thai culture's main features. It substitutes for competence.

I weekly drive through Muaklek, the elevated rail track crossing the Khao Yai hills is impressive, sky high, 1st line ready, 2nd under construction. A master piece of civil engineering.

And then onwards to Nong Khai, Vientianne (Laos) and Kunming (China) by ?00000!

At 1 billion baht per kilometer they still can't get this project done. If Rama II is any indication it's quite likely that we won't see this line built in our lifetime.

Any "deal" involving China can only end is disaster for the host country. Thailand's leaders are complete and utter idiots, there's no contesting that. Their stupidity is actually a good thing as it stalls Beijing's plans.

The Chinese thrive on such delays, acquiring shipping and rights to certain ports for not completing the contracts, ask Sri Lanka and a few African nations about having to cede right to the CCP for delays and unfinished work, they love it.

Well the project was developed by the Prayut NCPO Junta government under its absolute powers. So basically same-same.

Albeit by Chinese engineers who got through negotiations between China and Thailand permission to design the project vs. Thai engineers.

(Google AI Overview):

"The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is the agency responsible for compulsory purchase and expropriation of land needed for the rail line."

"The Thai government maintains 100% ownership of the high-speed railway project's assets and is responsible for all investment in civil works, including land acquisition."

And that's just for the Bangkok to Korat leg. Amazing.

I don’t know much about this project but I would put money on it not being completed by 2030

Absolutlely so!

The new onward section to Vientianne is 427Kms! and no construction work has yet started! This includes a new rail/road bridge over the Mekong River at Nong Khai. How about the year 2100!

Only if the local hubmeisters attempt to build the line.

One phone call to China for engineers will get the entire line up and running by summer.
