Visa exempt & bank card renewal

Featured Replies

I have had a Bangkok bank account for about 30 years. My bank card expires in February and will be in Thailand visa exempt.

I am no longer on a long term visa or an extension.

I will be applying for a Non O based on marriage to a Thai spouse and entering Thailand with this in May.

I am concerned that if I try to get a new bank card they may close my account. Is it wise to wait until May when I have a Non O to go to the bank for a new bank card?

BBL notified me about a month ago that my debit card will expire at the end of this month. As I was in BKK today I decided to pop into their HQ on Silom Rd and get a new card. After presenting my car

Regrettably for the OP your first suggestion (Request a new card through Mobile App) is a no goer. There is an option in the Mobile App to request a new debit card e.g From the Home page click down:

Guess it depends if you can live without the card for a few months. If you have the app on your phone you can get cash without the card. What else do you use it for?

No worries - its just a new Bank Card...

The Bank just want to 'tie your ID' to you and your account, thats all - its simply part of showing ID for an at counter transaction - they're not interested in your visa for such matters as card renewal.

That is reassuring as I have checked my bank card and it expires at the end of this month and I will be in Thailand for February.

Kasikorn let me order a new card through the app. Does Bangkok Bank allow the same?

No, you have to visit a branch as far as I know.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. In order to physically get a new card the bank will need to check his passport and, by extension, his visa. A visa that does not comply with the bank's current requirements could be an issue. I would not risk it if it is his only Thai bank account.

I'd be very wary of that "reassurance" while on visa exempt unless you have another Thai bank account to use. If you do take a chance, make sure that you withdraw most of your funds prior to presenting yourself just in case it goes tits up...you can deposit the money again once you have the new card in your hands.

I don't think that you know that to be factual.

That's correct, foreign customers have to go to the branch.

I can confirm that I have had new bank cards issued, new bankbooks issued and had my face ID recorded, all in branch, while not on Non-O visas. The account was opened over 15 years ago when the visa one was on was not an issue. This was SCB not Bangkok Bank though.

OP, I think the odds are strongly in your favour but the proof is in the pudding.

When was that? I have done the same but things are changing and especially so at Bangkok Bank.

SCB now require a 1 year visa to open an account, not sure if that's relevant or not.

I think the general rule was you had to have a long term visa to open an account. Years ago it was possible to open on a Tourist visa ,but the banks are much stricter now.

I am not opening a new account ,just need a new bank card due to expiry of the current card.

The Bangkok Bank is the only account I have and I need to keep this account for when I enter later this year on a Non O based on a Thai Spouse and the extension after the initial 90 days.

How long has it been since you’ve physically had done business inside a bkk bank? Banks are now required to check pp stamps.

Maybe a couple of years. I always use the online banking website for transfers ,the ATM for cash and the Bank book update machine.

I downloaded the Bangkok Bank app yesterday and I got a message saying to contact the branch for verification of my details.

I am now thinking it will be better to wait until I enter with a Non O before contacting the branch for a new bank card.

Probably a good idea.

Does Bangkok Bank offers virtual card?

Im banking with Kasikorn and dont have physical card for quite some time, using their virtual card for services like Lazada, Grab, Bolt etc. and if for some reason I need cash, there are cardless withdrawals from ATM via your bank app.

I know that to be factual - I have a Pink ID which is registered to my account, so I've been able to make 'at counter transactions' update Bank Books, receive new cards, make at counter withdrawals and transfers without a Passport (using Pink ID)... Because, once we have opened an account and its running, the banks are interested in our 'ID' not our visa status.

That said: Mileage 'may' vary - at one time my Passport was at an Embassy getting a Visa, so I used an 'old passport with the corner clipped off for ID purposes' (with a letter / receipt from said Embassy that I am without passport due to visa processing)...

One SCB Branch manager refused to process my transaction with an expired Passport - I called head office, who said an expired passport that shows my Photo, name, DOB etc was fine - the Branch manager still refused !!!... So I went to another branch and faced no issues whatsoever.

Valid points - given the ease digital payments (PromtPay / QR codes etc), I can't remember the last time I actually withdrew Thai cash from an ATM - its been at least 6 months.

Thus: In the Ops shoes - IF he has concerns - does he really need a card at all ???

I will be entering visa exempt and don't have a Pink card or yellow tabien baan.

No, you do not, you're speculating about the bank's reason in this case.

That is not true. Every time a passport is submitted and copied, for whatever reason, the bank staff check and copy the visa/extemsion page also. If the visa/extension has expired, service will be denied.

As you have online banking just transfer to your wife and let her withdraw the cash for you. (Less her handling fee of course).

OK. Sorry, I missed that.
