BTS Under Fire for Seizing Rabbit Card from Myanmar Man

BTS Under Fire for Seizing Rabbit Card from Myanmar Man

A Myanmar man has raised concerns about alleged bias after his Rabbit Card was confiscated at a BTS station in Bangkok. The man, Zaw Htun Lat, shared his experience on Facebook, claiming the seizure occurred when staff viewed his passport. This incident has sparked online criticism regarding a perceived policy targeting people from specific countries deemed high-risk.

On 30 December, Zaw, who has long used the Rabbit Card for daily travel in Bangkok, described how BTS staff blocked his card after he presented his passport. According to him, the staff cited a recent change in terms and conditions, promising a refund of the remaining balance within a week. Zaw mentioned being advised to switch to single-trip tickets, which he argued negates the Rabbit Card's convenience.

Other Myanmar citizens have reportedly experienced similar issues, leading Zaw to question the underlying logic of the policy. The restriction appears to apply to individuals from Myanmar, North Korea, and Iran, as well as some Thai political regions, who now face limitations on using Rabbit Cards but not on purchasing single or day passes. This discrepancy, Zaw argued, seemed contradictory if the motive for the policy was indeed security-related.

BTS responded to the outcry by clarifying that the Rabbit Card serves as electronic money, requiring users to verify and update identity information under Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations. The company insists this applies uniformly to all users, irrespective of nationality, and denies any form of discrimination.

Passengers, both Thai and foreign, have the option to update their KYC information at any BTS ticket office. This policy aims to comply with financial regulations and ensure public safety, according to BTS officials, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways:

  • A Myanmar man claims his Rabbit Card was unfairly confiscated by BTS.

  • BTS states that the policy aligns with financial regulations, denying bias.

  • All passengers can complete KYC updates at BTS ticket offices.

Nothing new that racism and xenophobia are cultural trait in Thailand. Even aimed against westerners.

There's a lesson here. If a BTS staff member ever asks you for your Rabbit card, refuse!

They'll never refund your value. The staff aren't to blame, it's company policy.

Doubtless you have some evidence to support that claim?

You can only refuse the staff's request until your card runs out.

What are you going to do when you have to top up with them?

I had to show passport and give my phone number. Luckily, my

country wasn't on the <deleted> list.

Weaponized Rabbit Cards...what's next???

"I only want to go to Chid Lom, not North Korea!!"

The BTS policy is absurd. I wanted to top up my Rabbit card with 200 lousy baht and the staff told me he needed to see my passport. There was maybe 50 baht left on it. Ludicrous. Could the morons in charge at least change the policy so that ID is only required if topping up to some significant amount, like the princely sum of 1000 baht or more?

Their policy is not to require passport ID at every top-up, it is to re-register (update) cardholders ID details once, then subsequent top-ups can be made without ID.

They still haven't clarified what triggers the need to "update" one's personal details.

As I don't usually carry my passport within Bangkok and as they don't accept anything else (such as my Thai DL), it would be good to know in advance when such an update will become necessary.

So far, so good though - I registered my Rabbit card with my passport when that rule originally came into effect and haven't been asked for my passport since.

Whatever hare-brained scheme is this?

Absolute 1i10cy - all the way. Apart from absolutely non-acceptable exclusions of nationalities (they have legal papers otherwise they would not have such a semi-divine card in the first place) I almost fell of my chair on the second group.

Not entering into how Thai politicians are getting elected but how can a Thai public transport operator ban elected Thai politicians from certain provinces?

a) the mind boggles
b) shows the absolute disregard brain death of the higher ups of Bangkok's skytrain operator.
c) I will advocate a similar ban for staff from BTS on my hometown's public transport operator ;-)
