A Russian tourist has died and multiple people were injured after a speedboat collided with a fishing vessel in the Andaman Sea near Koh Kai and the Phi Phi islands on 11 January 2026. The crash occurred at about 08.55 hrs in waters off Ao Nang subdistrict, Mueang Krabi district, prompting a large-scale emergency response by authorities in Phuket and Krabi. In total, 22 people were injured in the incident, including Thai crew members and foreign tourists.

The speedboats, carrying passengers and crew, struck the fishing boat Phichai Samut 1 while it was engaged in fishing activities near the Phi Phi area. There were 55 people on board the speedboats at the time of the collision.

Initial checks confirmed that three of those affected were Thai nationals serving as boat staff, while 19 were foreign tourists. Officials confirmed one fatality: Miss Starykh Elizaveta, an 18-year-old Russian national. Several others sustained injuries of varying severity, with some receiving treatment at Koh Phi Phi Hospital before being transferred to medical facilities in Phuket at the request of the injured individuals and tour operators.

Following the collision, Phuket province coordinated closely with multiple agencies to manage the situation. The Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation’s Tourist Assistance Centre, known as the Pearl Centre, dispatched two boats to the scene to assist with evacuations and ensure safety in the surrounding area. Might not be picturesque but I'm sure happy to have spent the passed 25 years in Issan away from this lunacy.

Assuming the video was taken from the fishing boat, that's one very large and likely slow vessel that the speedboat did not see. How the hell did that happen? RIP for the deceased, and hopefully all those injured will recover fully. Wonder who's paying all the medical bills and any compensation?

Speedboat Operator to Face Charges After Fatal Phi Phi Crash

image.png

Pictures courtesy of Matichon

An update from Thailand’s Marine Department has confirmed that a fatal collision between a speedboat and a fishing vessel near Phi Phi Island has been attributed to negligence by the speedboat operator, resulting in the death of one foreign tourist. The incident occurred at about 9.30am on 11 January 2026 and led to the speedboat sinking, with all passengers and crew rescued from the water. One passenger later died from injuries sustained in the crash and was confirmed to be a Russian tourist.

The Director-General of the Marine Department, Kritphet Chaiyachua, said the department received the initial report from Marine Office Region 5 on the morning of the incident. The crash took place close to Phi Phi Island in Krabi province, prompting an immediate emergency response. Survivors were brought ashore and transferred to Phi Phi Hospital for treatment.

Both vessels involved had departed from Phuket prior to the collision. The passenger vessel was identified as the speedboat Korawit Marine 888, registration number 665100308, with a gross tonnage of 23.18 tonnes. At the time of the incident, 55 people were on board, including three crew members and 52 passengers travelling from Chalong Pier in Phuket to Phi Phi Island.

The fishing vessel involved was named Pichai Samut 1, registration number 238306458, which had officially departed under the PIPO system in Phuket on 8 January 2026. It carried 10 crew and fishing workers and was actively trawling nets in the area when the collision occurred. The collision happened at coordinates 7°40.670’ north and 98°42.14’ east, close to Phi Phi Island.

Preliminary findings indicate that the speedboat struck the fishing vessel while it was towing nets, causing severe damage. Kritphet said rough sea conditions at the time, with waves reaching around two metres, which made close manoeuvring difficult. He stated that the speedboat operator appeared to have misjudged the situation, losing control and being unable to avoid the collision despite having prior experience.

The speedboat operator is currently under investigation and in the custody of investigators for legal proceedings. Kritphet said relevant agencies, including the Marine Department and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, will oversee the investigation, compensation, insurance matters and assistance for the deceased tourist’s family.

Matichon reported that the Marine Department acknowledged that the incident has affected Thailand’s tourism image and announced stricter enforcement measures. Authorities will conduct a detailed inquiry and if serious negligence is confirmed, penalties may include suspension or revocation of the operator’s licence. Regional marine offices in Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga have also been instructed to hold urgent meetings with operators to reinforce safety standards and intensify vessel inspections before departure.

I've said this here before: if you get on any water taxi, ferry boat, speed boat, or anything that carries you on the water, it is the same as getting a motorbike taxi. High risk, often happens here.
