US Suspends Immigrant Visa Processing for Thailand

Featured Replies

The "public charge" provisions made it next to impossible before the suspension.

The way things are going under the conmans rule, no one wants to go to the USA anyway. No real loss to anyone until the govt changes.

  • They're taking a timeout to evaluate why so many approved visa candidates end up on the dole when they come to the USA. Sounds reasonable to me. Sounds like the vetting process hasn't been working v

  • How many Americans are going on the dole in Thailand? Here's the key, from the OP: aiming to prevent the entry of individuals deemed likely to become a public charge.

It's already virtually impossible to be an immigrant in Thailand. Almost all visas are "non-immigrant".

So basically, the US is the one reciprocating... Thailand's been that way forever. (Though, in fairness- it's easier to be a tourist in Thailand, but easier to get on the dole in the USA)

And now, they're losing cash cows to other SEA countries with friendlier visa policies. Not just American cash cows. Europeans, too.

Hopefully Thailand reciprocates.

Well, it might keep some of the riffraff out, no more "public charge" (GoFundMe) tourists.

US tourist Visa is silly! 10 years multi entry. it should be 90 days for tourists...

My wife (marriage not registered but could be if needed ) needs to start the visa process and hope this won't complicate things. She isn't wealthy but has multiple properties and rental income (15-25k). Also has 1-2 million in the bank. She is in great health with no children and looks like a respectable 50+ ( biased I know ). I'm also financially stable but it is my understanding that my situation isn't a concern in regards to her visa.

Anybody out there have an opinion on the above? What issues might I expect?

I would wait, you don't want a denial on record. Make sure things are more friendly before initiating the paperwork.

I wonder how many will think that the suspension/ban applies to tourist visas, as opposed to those seeking to emigrate to the US. Many might see 'USA suspends visa processing for Thailand' and think everyone is banned. That's how a Thai family member here read it at first.

A tourist visa is a non-immigrant visa

The autopen administration was just the straw that broke to camel's back. I think what opened a lot of eyes is the current congressional investigation where it was revealed that 78% of the Somalis in the USA are on some kind of welfare even after 10 years in the country. Not hard to imagine that a lot of others are just as much a drain on the US taxpayers, even if they do reliably vote Blue...

Americans could be refused because they risk becoming a nuisance. You want I link to some articles?

Since you don't know, and because the Thai authorities may not have accurate figures, it might be a good idea to toss out all those Americans in Thailand on retirement or marriage visas. Just to be safe, until things can be reassessed and more clear. Better safe than sorry. Sure they're not immigrants per se, but they are long term/permanent residents, so they represent the same threat to the public coffers. The measly 400K-800K in bank deposits is hardly enough to handle a major medical emergency, so the cost would fall on the Thai people. Thailand should also up the financial and insurance requirements to, say, 5 million baht in the bank and at least that much in medical insurance for retirement or marriage visas. And I don't mean proof of funds, but actual i'n a Thai bank' funds, in country and accessible if needed.

Business owners, on the other hand, have significant capital in country, and should the need arise, that capital and/or assets could be seized by the Thai authorities if required to cover the foreigner's unpaid costs.

Quid pro quo is simply fair, no?

Get packing......just in case.

Totally agree with you Jai Yen. Things will not change until the fascists are out of power.

So USA cracking down on welfare abuse is fascism but Thailand making married people report their location every 90 days is the land of smiles. Really?

Your disdain for Americans is noted. And frankly my dear, we don't give a damn.

In fact, it's kind of entertaining to watch lefty heads explode.

What if Thailand does the same?

How many Americans - and Westerners in general - are getting citizen immigration status in Thailand each year? How many of those are becoming a cost to Thai govt in terms of benefits?

Answer those and then have a think about the impact.

My Thai wife got one of those which just expired a few months ago. It's the ultimate slap in the dick when she gets a 10 year TOURIST visa and I need to show up with a 2" stack of paper and cash in the bank then report my location every 90 days like a frickin' criminal.

Shut all that nonsense down. Put them on a short leash like they do for us and deport/denaturalize everyone abusing any system or being a burden on the public.

These rules have always been in place, with the unofficial opening of U.S. the last few years. In the late 80's my mom sponsor a number of her family from China in review of the application she ran short of the financial requirements that is where I came in when asked by my mom. In filling out the application and inteview I didn't feel any of the rules were unreasonable from the government basically they wanted me to gaurantee support for 10 years meaning that they couldn't request any financial support like welfare?

Was I nervous yes but when your mom ask for help you give it to her, but her family lived the American dream while here, worked hard, started a business, purchased homes, and push their kids education wise in which many went to college.

When my mom passed at 103, many years without ever seeing them at the service many of them voice how grateful they were to my mom and me!

My wife sent me this on Facebook today from Thai social media on this same topic. It's hilarious to see some Thai person posting the spreadsheet of shame. (Thailand is all the way at the bottom of the list, hardly a bad offender). The fact India is not banned while Thailand is banned is a terrible injustice.

Looks like the usual anti American suspects are posting again. Maybe take a look at your countries leadership I’m sure they leave a lot to be desired. The UK is gone, EU nearly, Australia the same.

Freedom of Speech no longer exists. France just put 6 people in prison for openly criticizing the wife of President Macron.

Joe Biden runs a crime family.

Trump is trying to clean up a mess thats nearly impossible to clean up. Democrat radicals are burning synagogues, running down police, and shooting people in churches to name a few.

Yes America has many problems, name a country that doesn’t please. Perhaps Hungary?

I didn't think anybody was interested in tourism in the US,based on:

Illegal arrests.

Incarcerstion of visitors/tourists.

5 years of social media inspection

Gun violence

Even though, it's all a show on the world stage, from a stand up point of view it would be reciprocal. I guarantee not one person in this thread could post their Thai citizenship. Even guys who have been in Thailand for decades who have a family.

I think a litle history is needed here.

In 2010, when I came here, I asked what would happen if I married a Thai and wanted to take her back to CANADA. Immigration told me to forget it. I would need to be married for at least a year, living in Thailand and i would have to prove that I could aford it and that this was a lasting marriage.

The challenge that North America at the time was going through was that many of the Asian ladies that came over with the promise of great jobs as nannies and massage therapists ended up either working as prostitutes or working in strip clubs.

The one criterion that was demanded was tht if you were going to Canada, you had to have a landed immigrant who was working and paying taxes, which would guarantee that they could support you. You were ineligible for any assistance.

Then people like "little Pierre" needed votes, so they relaxed the rules.

Biden, with his open-door policy and the American government's alignment with European philosophy, opened the borders while also providing full assistance to people who came to the country.

States like Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Illinois, Washington and California are now crying and demanding more money because they can't afford the price tag for their Sanctuary rules. Mini countries are forming in cities where people can live without, and true Americans are suffering because they do not get the support that the immigrants get.

TRUMPO CAN NOT SAY NO TO SOMALIS AND NO TO RUSSIA. He has to make it a broad sweep so ASEAN countries are included. How many average people can afford to go on a holiday to the U.S.?

Give it a few months, and things will loosen up.

Are you a Thai citizen, Mr Guy with a Thai wife? Yeah. That's why a lot of these people around the world will not respect people such as yourself. They will play upon the Liberalism and ideologies you may have been indoctrinated with and not hold the same accountability from where they are from and what they have been conditioned with. Admittedly that can often be due to low IQ, we know a lot of non-Europeans are exactly that, but mostly it's from a place where they think you're weak. I just don't bend easily like that and I can't say it's done me any harm..

masked losers/cowards kidnapping moms is a bad look, they took some autistic lady out of her car yesterday, she was a citizen and it took 6 cowards to drag her out. Only to release her down the road away from the cameras.

Trash humans one and all, only the Cult likes what daddy is doing but they are dumb anyway

Well stated, Jai Yen. This is the new America, now known as Trump America 2.0 or MAGA America. The country has regressed to the equivalent of Germany in the late thirties. Fortunately for me, I am a Canadian and can only watch in horror what is going on south of the border.
