Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is likely to be granted parole in May after serving two-thirds of his one-year prison sentence, as reported by a source at the Department of Corrections. The news emerged following a family visit to Klongprem Central Prison. Thaksin’s anticipated parole can occur as soon as he completes eight months of his sentence.

Thaksin was incarcerated on September 9, 2025, following a Supreme Court judgment for abuse of authority and conflict of interest related to his tenure before 2006. Having returned from over 15 years of self-exile abroad in August 2023, he was convicted and initially sentenced to eight years, later reduced to one year by royal clemency. According to departmental procedures, parole eligibility is assessed based on behavior and time served, with reviews occurring quarterly.

During this week’s visit, Thaksin's son-in-law, Pidok Sooksawas, expressed that Thaksin was in “good spirits” and kept informed of political developments and current events. Thaksin conveyed encouragement to Pheu Thai Party candidates and expressed sorrow regarding a tragic crane accident in Nakhon Ratchasima, which claimed 32 lives. Amid media and supporter presence, Thaksin’s expressions of condolences were relayed by Pidok.

Going forward, Thaksin is expected to qualify for parole in May if he maintains eligibility criteria, which include good conduct. His potential release aligns with processes outlined by the Department of Corrections under the 2019 regulations. This development is closely watched by both supporters and critics, speculating on possible implications for Thailand’s political landscape, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Thaksin Shinawatra may receive parole in May after completing eight months of his sentence.

  • A Supreme Court ruling and royal clemency previously reduced his original sentence from eight years to one year.

  • Thaksin remains a significant figure in Thai politics, with ongoing public interest in his case.

I thought it was said somewhere before that no parole would be granted for Thaksin?

Maybe he can apply, but drag the heels until his one year is up.

Do you think his family has like a beautician come in there to dye his hair jet black TIT

So his original sentence of a minimum 8 years is now reduced to 8 months. Many will wonder how much that reduction cost

He shouldn't get parole he had his sentence already reduced to one year by royal clemency that should be more than enough .

How the two-thirds rule still applies after his original sentence was reduced already by 7/8th and he was on the run for 15 years is a mystery to me!

He will need to find a replacement for his assigned tasks of supervisising a sewer maintenance team and teaching English language to inmates to ensure continuity.

Generally speaking the sentence is halved for good behavior, brown envelopes must have been flying hot and heavy for this to get reduced so much, or maybe he was just "extra good" in prison. 555!

why are you posting BS !!! if you can access google you need to do research what a rubbish post

He is a 'one', but don't see the issue here tbh. The eight year thing has already been done with. The current sentence is one year, he has behaved (apparently) and normal inmates receive same treatment. The bloke is a firestarter, but it is what it is.

Thaksin Set for Parole Review as Eligibility Confirmed

Former Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be eligible for parole consideration in May 2026, after serving two-thirds of his one-year prison sentence, according to the Department of Corrections. Officials emphasized that the process follows strict legal procedures without preferential treatment. Thaksin is currently incarcerated at Klong Prem Central Prison in Bangkok, having started his sentence on September 9, 2025.

Thaksin's sentence stems from a ruling by the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions. The 2017 Corrections Act and accompanying regulations outline that inmates can become eligible for parole after completing two-thirds of their sentence. Any reductions must be approved and cannot exceed one-third of the original term.

The parole review process starts at the prison level where Klong Prem Central Prison will propose eligible inmates to a parole committee. This committee, which includes officials from multiple agencies, evaluates inmates’ records and documentation. Approvals are then forwarded to the Department of Corrections for additional review.

The department conducts a further evaluation before presenting recommendations to a parole subcommittee led by the permanent secretary for justice. Factors such as the inmate's offense, conduct, rehabilitation efforts, and public safety are considered in the parole decision-making process to ensure compliance with legal standards.

Justice Minister Pol Lt Gen Rutthaphon Naowarat confirmed that Thaksin’s parole review adheres to normal legal procedures. He stressed that the decision must pass through three different committee reviews. Thaksin’s case will be evaluated fairly, with no deviation from established laws and criteria for all inmates, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Thaksin Shinawatra can be considered for parole in May 2026.

  • The review process follows a strict legal framework with no special treatment.

  • Several committees must review and approve the parole decision.
