Pattaya City staged a full-scale fire emergency drill on Walking Street, simulating a realistic blaze and rescue operation to test preparedness and enhance safety for residents, businesses and international tourists in one of Thailand’s busiest nightlife areas. The exercise involved multiple agencies and included the rescue of six people reported trapped inside a building, with operations carried out under realistic conditions.

The drill was organised by Pattaya City under the supervision of Mr Krisana Boonsawat, Deputy Mayor of Pattaya, together with Mr Sukkaraj Kalra, Chairman of the Walking Street Community. Participants included Pattaya City councillors, members of the Chonburi Provincial Administrative Organisation, officers from Pattaya City Police Station, Tourist Police, Sawang Boriboon Rescue Foundation, medical teams from Pattaya City Hospital, and other relevant agencies.

The simulated incident involved a fire breaking out at a business premises within the Walking Street area. According to the scenario, six people were trapped inside the building and were unable to escape through the front entrance, requiring emergency responders to adapt their rescue strategy.

Rescue teams adjusted their plan by accessing the site from the seaward side, deploying Pattaya City’s marine rescue units with specialist equipment to assist those trapped. At the same time, multiple fire engines were mobilised to control the blaze, following established fire response procedures for a structural fire.

The exercise covered all stages of an emergency response, from the initial alert and command procedures to the evacuation of residents and tourists, securing the area, firefighting operations and medical support. The drill began in the morning and concluded once the simulated situation was officially declared under control in line with the emergency plan.

After the exercise, all participating agencies conducted a joint debrief and review to assess performance at each stage of the response. Identified weaknesses and recommendations will be used to refine Pattaya’s disaster prevention and mitigation plans, ensuring greater effectiveness in dealing with real emergencies in the future.

Mr Krisana Boonsawat said Pattaya City places strong emphasis on upgrading safety measures in tourist areas, particularly locations with high visitor numbers. He said the objective is to build confidence among local residents, business operators and both Thai and foreign tourists through improved readiness and coordination.
