Is fibre the new protein? The surprising health benefits of the latest wellness trend

Last year, many of us went protein-mad in the hopes of boosting our strength and fitness. But over the past few months, fibre has become the hot topic on social media - with only 4% of us getting the recommended daily amount.

Videos of people sprinkling chia seeds on top of porridge and nutritionists lauding the benefits of red kidney beans and chickpeas are filling up people's TikTok feeds.

The NHS recommends adults eat 30g of fibre a day but most people in the UK aren't eating even close to that, with the average daily consumption at around 16.4g a day, and women eating less than men.

I double down on fiber.

I've been adding fiber to my meals for the past 6 years, eating chia seeds, flax seeds, psyllium husk, etc., every day. With my diet (Keto), adding extra fiber becomes important.

Every morning, I take a spoonful of chia seeds and crushed flax seeds in a glass of water. I'll add a spoonful of psyllium husk to cooked dishes. Often, I'll make a dessert 'pudding' with chia seeds, sugarless flavored syrup, and some berries.

Getting enough fiber is easy these days. Psyllium husk is flavorless, so can be added to just about any 'wet' dish without affecting the flavor of the food. Chia seeds are quite cheap (if you don't buy the gourmet brands), and are a nutritional powerhouse with high levels of Omega3 as well as nutritional fiber.

They do not really contain a lot of fiber.

There's soluble fiber and non soluble fiber. Different health benefits.

Yes, it is a source of fiber. Unfortunately, it is a poor source of fibre. You will need to eat between 50-60 biscuits a day to get the minimum daily requirement.

Each biscuit contains 0.5 grams of dietary fibre, both soluble and non-soluble. We need about 25g-30g of fibre daily.
Compare this to an avocado, which contains 10g-15g of dietary fiber.

A teaspoon of Psyllium Husk powder (Metamucil) a day, keeps the doctor away.
