Topic is usually covered in the motor forum. Generally: Passport with Non O visa and/or one year extension (copies). Old license. Proof of address ("CoR"). Likely from immigration in your case. valid

  • They have always accepted one original certificate of residence and one copy from me. At the immigration office they may try to persuade you to get 2 certificates @ 300 Baht each.

A few answers required:

Where will you renew?

What Visa/extension do you have?

Do you have a Work permit

hi sorry for confusion.......i have retirement visa and will be renewing at the driving license place off of highway 36 near the big international school...and i dont have work permit......thanks

I think your first step is to go there and make an appointment. As far as I know it's no longer a walk-in 1 step process at that DLT. And at the appointment apart from residence letter and medical cert you will need to have done the e-learning here... https://www.dlt-elearning.com/

So that would be the 'Pattaya' office...even though it's miles out of Pattaya city.

Old license.

Proof of address ("CoR").

Likely from immigration in your case. valid for ? 30 days. Not sure.

Health certificate (from any road side clinic or from hospitals). Valid for 30 days.

Online "training" performed with resulting QR code (valid for 6 months).

Specifically for Pattaya your main problem might be the crowds/queues/obtaining an appointment. Can't help with that.

The 5yr license expires on your birthday. Good idea to apply just AFTER that. Gives you almost 6 years of validity for the new license.

thank you for the swift replies.....so am I better booking a queue number online or going to banglamung DLT in person to book a queue number?

Yes. Officially it's the Banglamung branch. Just a few hundred meters from Pattaya "border" 😁

I believe you have to go there.

At Banglamung/Pattaya DLT you must go in person to the small booth outside the main door with your passport and current licence to make an appointment for your test, which will probably be 2-3 weeks hence.

They will give you a piece of paper outlining what you must bring with you on the actual test day. These will include online video test (QR code provided after passing test) , Medical certificate and Residence certificate (from Immigration) plus of course your passport and licence.

If renewing motorbike licence at the same time, then 2 Residence Certificates will be required (although some people have had Car/Motorbike incorporated on the same COR. Only one online video test required and only one Medical Certificate required)

And as someone else said, go after your birthday and you will get an extra year.

Sounds like good service?

Have you (or others) noticed that booking an appointment for the renewal at LTD Chatujak seems to be disabled? I needed to make a booking at LTD in Phra Kanong - next closest place it seemed (for central Bangkok). Is it no longer possible to renew at Chatujak?

Could be useful I guess, though only good for 30 days..

I'm sure it's still possible, just can't make an appointment online.

You will need to show the passport used when you obtained your existing license and your current one if it has changed.

Did all my stuff last Friday. Online videos and multi choice questions for car and bike. Each video is about an hour long, four or five questions at the end of each one. I usually just walk in but as things here constantly change I booked an appointment online, plenty of dates available in my DLT. The documents required are listed on either the test website or the booking one, can't remember which. A medical cert is a gray area. One page doesn't mention it being required and another does. Only 100 baht where I live so I will get one anyway.

Reading the comments here nothing much to add. I recently did mine but had to do it another province.

Only points I would add is I was asked for 2 sets of docs for each licence. Also if you renew it shortly after it expires you basically get a whole extra year. Eg, renew it 1 week after the expiry and get 5 years, 11 months and 3 weeks validity. Conversely renew it before it expires and get less than 5 years validity.

Replacement licences expire on your birthday. You get 5 years from your next birthday. If you renew a month early you get 5 years and one month from the day of renewal.

Is there any benefit of using an agent to make the appointment and assist generally with the renewal? There are many adverts for such services. I would exclude the obvious 'scam' ones that don't require you to attend the centre or do any tests.

Rules changed some years ago.

Always required.

Also the form (document) and content has changed (mental? epileptic?)

Other info is outdated.

And makes sense.

RE Early renewal yeh that may be right. Thanks for the correction. Still better off doing it after it expires to get almost a full extra year.

The med cert changed over 5 years ago, has it changed again? Just pointing out that on e learning website it lists documentation required for renewal of 2 to a five year licence, 5 to 5 year licence and doesn't mention the requirement for the med cert for 5 to 5. I have always taken a med cert with me.

Yes, but involves driving with an expired licence which I would rather not do in case it invalidates my insurance.

No. I didn't remember how long ago it was changed. 5 years sounds plausible.

Cautious people could use a driver/taxi. Own car is irrelevant for the DL procedure.

Car related stuff can be done ahead one to three months.

I just renewed my 5 year dl in December. As I live in Pattaya, the normal place to go is the Banglamung DLT (off Hwy 36). Was told (by agent) the wait time for que was about 2 months if I wanted to wait. Option 2 was to take van to Samut Prakan DLT (with group) the following week. About an hour and 45 minute drive to Samut Prakan DLT. Because it's a group of people the whole experience took about 8 hours. It also a bit more expensive because of transportation but for me it was worth it to get the proceedure behind me. YMMV
