A fire broke out late on Tuesday morning at the site of a previous crane collapse on Rama 2 Road, sending black smoke billowing over one of Thailand’s busiest arterial routes and alarming motorists and nearby businesses. The blaze occurred at around 11.00am on 20 January 2026 on the outbound side of Rama 2 Road, in front of the Paris Hotel in Samut Sakhon province, prompting an immediate response from fire and rescue teams.

The incident was first reported by the Facebook page “Fire & Rescue Thailand”, which posted images and a brief message stating: “Fire at the collapsed crane debris, Rama 2 Road.” Firefighters were dispatched to the scene and were in the process of bringing the fire under control, with traffic disruption reported in the area as smoke spread across the roadway.

The location is the same site where a crane previously collapsed, an incident that has drawn national attention due to its severity and the subsequent impact on transport infrastructure. The earlier collapse involved a crane falling onto a train, leading to fatalities and injuries and triggering a series of official investigations and compensation measures for victims and their families.

In the wake of the earlier disaster, the Prime Minister ordered the Ministry of Transport to conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the facts surrounding the crane collapse. The Prime Minister also presided over the handover of compensation to the families of those killed, with reports confirming payments of more than 1.5 million baht per deceased victim, including cases linked to the train accident caused by the collapse.

Online reports shared following Tuesday’s fire suggested that the blaze may have been sparked during debris removal operations at the site. Social media users claimed that workers from Italian-Thai Development had been cutting steel as part of the dismantling process, causing sparks that ignited remaining wreckage, although officials have not confirmed the cause. Authorities stated that the exact origin of the fire remains under investigation.

Amarin reported that firefighters were able to contain the flames and secure the area, while officials monitored the situation to prevent further flare ups. Further updates are expected once inspections are completed and the cause of the fire is formally established, amid ongoing scrutiny of safety practices along the long-troubled Rama 2 corridor.

Key Takeaways

• A fire broke out at 11.00am on 20 January at the Rama 2 crane collapse site in Samut Sakhon.

• The blaze occurred at the same location as a previous crane collapse that led to deaths and compensation payouts.

• Authorities are investigating the cause, with unconfirmed reports linking it to debris removal work.

Unbelievable. It would be funny if it weren't so serious.

Start cutting up steel before cleaning up combustibles, spilt fuel etc. WTF is going through the heads of these idiots or more importantly their supervisors??? It will never end!!

Thailand's incompetence and corruption is being exposed more and more. I know it was there before for decades, but it has been really coming apart at the seams since Covid.

Can't build without disaster - can't clean up without more f**k ups - does this company know anything? 😞
