Canadian PM Sets the Record Straight in Davos

Featured Replies

So Canadian PM Mark Carney gave a brilliant speech in Davos, a speech that should have come from a European leader months ago. But better late than never, and I hope Europe will follow suit.

WHat a cracking PM Carney has turned out to be, and what an auspicious time for him to step forward. He is in many ways the anti-Trump, he's everything Trump is not. Smart, stable, knowledgeable, pragmatic, dependable, empathetic......I could go on, but you get the idea.

The FT links their article on Carney's speech. I've posted the linked from outside the paywall below.

"The rules-based international order is undergoing a “rupture, not a transition”, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Tuesday, as he urged the world’s “middle powers” to unite in response.

Carney did not mention Donald Trump by name but his speech at Davos won a standing ovation from executives attending the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, where the US president will speak on Wednesday, days after threatening European allies with new tariffs if they do not accept his quest to acquire Greenland."

I had almost forgotten what competent leadership sounds like, having put up with a year of willful ignorance and idiocy from the bloated clown in DC.

The Free World is uniting against America.

The moron Trump has no clue what he has unleashed. Trade partners, allies in times of strife, intelligence sharing, and funding the ever-increasing US deficit are all at risk because of Trump's moronic tendencies and personal insecurity.

It really is time for the US to break up. States running surpluses or who are net contributors to the Federal Govt, most all of whom are Blue States, have to give serious consideration to secession.

Trump gives his Davos speech today. Unless he flies in some trained seals to applaud, he is likely to be met with silence, if not boos. He'll also slur his speech, mispronounce words, go on tangents, and put his dementia and abject idiocy on full display for all the world.

When lies are posed as the truth and the truth depicted as lies, then surely it is a battle between good and evil.

I know on which side I am and it's nothing to do with Left nor Right. These are truly sick people and I'm not sure they even realise.

There is a very good reason PM Carney did not mention Trump by name- he is smart enough to realize that Canada needs the US far more than the US needs Canada. SImple pragmatism. He has so far been able to navigate the situation well, I'll give him that.

Carney is the type of leader that Trump respects- he has a business/financial background, educational pedigree, and is somewhat of a nationalist.

The spine is growing.

Trump told to 'f--- off' by Danish lawmaker during European Parliament debate about Greenland

"Let me put this in words you might understand: Mr. President, f--- off," Vistisen added, drawing reactions from the chamber.

Trickle, trickle....

Trump will be late.

Technical problems with Air Force One. Lights in the cabin went off.

Return to airbase and use replacement aircraft.

Have to disagree there - Carney is a globalist.

It really is unprecedented what we're seeing from the USA/Trump now. To completely s**t you own bed, shoot yourself in the foot, score an own goal, dig your own grave (pick your preferred idiom) on this scale is truly mind-blowing. And why is it happening? Because an old, failing narcissistic moron feels wronged.

Ok, so they hold Treasury Securities. Do you think they will dump them? If so, who will buy them? If no one wants them, then they have to be sold at a discount and Pension funds cannot do that if they want to remain solvent and to be able to service their pension obligations. Sure they can force interest rates to increase and. damage the US economy, but they would damage their economies at the same time.

What you are ignoring about Trump is that he is a serial bankrupt. He used bankruptcy to eliminate debt obligations. Push him too hard and he would allow the US to default on its international debt. And then what? Do you think all those countries have the trillions to cover a debt? The world is dealing with a person who plays the system and has a deep seated dislike of international bankers and investment/pension funds.

Fantastic speech, absolute best I have read for many years; an outstanding example of leadership. Strongly recommend everyone to read in full.

"After less than a year as prime minister of Canada, Carney offered a blunter assessment of the world on Tuesday: “the strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must.”

In a wide-ranging speech that was at times elegiac for the predictable rules-based order, Carney laid out a doctrine for a world of fractured international norms, warning “compliance will not buy safety”.

“The old order is not coming back. We should not mourn it,” he said. “Nostalgia is not a strategy.”

Thank you, PM Mark Carney! And Canada! We love you in Europe, have done for a long time.

And this speech? What a treat! I am pretty confident Europe will fully continue to wake up from our beauty sleep now. USA and Trump have gone too far, and they are isolating themselves more and more each day. They asked for this, now they'll face the consequences.

And you think Trump's the nutcase? Anders talks even more than Trump but seems to think less.

That 20k is the same size as the entire Danish armed forces but behind a million fighting Ukrainians that number is not really significant, except that then NATO is fully involved and therefore brings the risk of nuclear war much, much closer.

Everything Trump touches dies. Name a company or organization he ran that did not go into bankruptcy or closed for fraud.
