Doomsday Clock Ticks Closer to Global Catastrophe!

Featured Replies

The Doomsday Clock, a symbol of humanity's proximity to annihilation, is now closer to midnight than ever before. On Tuesday, scientists at the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists moved the clock to 85 seconds before midnight. This historic shift underscores dire global threats, including nuclear dangers, climate change, and emerging technologies like AI and synthetic biology.

Bulletin CEO Alexandra Bell declared, "Every second counts," emphasizing the gravity of our current situation. The clock, a concept born during the Cold War, has been inching closer to midnight with growing global tension. This year marks the second consecutive advance, driven by escalating nuclear risks and climate instability.

Chair Daniel Holz voiced concerns about failing international cooperation. He noted that nuclear-armed states became more adversarial in 2025, pushing the clock forward. With a key US-Russia nuclear treaty set to expire, the risk of an arms race looms large.

The clock's hands reflect humanity’s record on addressing threats. Forward movement signals increased risk, while regression indicates progress. The clock has moved steadily towards midnight since 2011, with climate disasters worsening and novel threats like 'mirror life' and AI misinformation emerging.

Amid escalating conflicts and rising sea levels, Holz warned of synthetic organisms that pose potential pandemic threats. The ongoing war in Ukraine, American military actions, and global political tensions under President Trump exacerbate the sense of urgency.

Despite its symbolic nature, the clock remains a stark reminder of looming perils. Established in 1947 and marked by its inaugural seven-minute position, the clock’s adjustments have become a critical societal barometer. In 2026, humanity faces unprecedented challenges requiring urgent global cooperation.

Key Takeaways

  • Doomsday Clock reaches unprecedented proximity to midnight.

  • Nuclear tensions, climate change, and AI threats push humanity closer to catastrophe.

  • Global cooperation is crucial to mitigate escalating risks.

We're all doomed. Doomed i tell you.

Someone call Greta.

The end is near.

200.gif

50 years ago, we decided not to have kids because of the Doomsday Clock and nuclear weapons--it was 12 minutes to midnight. Well, accidents happen (both nuclear and biological). One accident, one IUD baby, one adopted.

And now it's seconds to midnight because cavemen are still clubbing their brothers. If this were a war movie or zombies or apocalypse or even the rapture, the suffering might be provocative or entertaining.

But it's all too real. And the people who aren't suffering are the ones perpetrating the suffering. The perps even have cheerleaders everywhere to applaud their decisive, manly violence.

Violence is bull<deleted>. We don't want it in our daily lives. But why can't we empathise with others. I just don't get it. Give peace a chance. But no country ever does.

I believe in scientists, not politicians. If you're not worried, you're a fool. If you're not speaking out against violence, you're an enabler. If you're actually participating in the violence, you're a monster.

Population growth seems vanished from the problem lists.

Simply because no one can speak out how to slow down.

4 billion Africans predicted until 2050.

India slightly surpassing China with 1.4 billion each.

Still have an old world atlas from school that shows 600 million for India.

Politically opinionated clap-trap released by 'bought' so-called scientists!

I have no doubt at all that the human race will destroy itself. Again. There is plenty of evidence of civilisations in the past that disappeared, leaving signs that that they had existed. Why we willingly invent things (now, AI among other things) to assist in our destruction is baffling.

Most pressing concern is the % of people who are now depressed, fed constant doomsday narratives. Especially the kids, and exacerbated by Covid lockdowns. Where is this inane group on that metric?

Get rid of horrid Iran regime and clock oughta go back a minute.
Vote out soft left wing clowns, like Starmer, another minute. Equality for all, not perceived victims, good grief.
Tell people the world ain't gonna end from climate change, two minutes. Cos it ain't despite constant accent on the negatives which can be dreamt up each and every day.
Reform the myriad of growing regulations and promote freedom, priceless.

Oh and encourage everyone to exercise, eat healthy food, cut the sugars and watch the world smile again.

To quote Private James Frazer from the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard, "we're doomed".

That was very helpful. Thank you,

💣

Only a fool disregards warnings of armageddon lightly unfortunately the world is full of foolish leaders that have the power to make it happen.

At my age the chances are I most likely won't see it but the potential for catastrophic conflicts or events that threaten the world or the human race are there.

Distraction ...

... not one catastrophic warning had come true yet, and there's been 100s. Probably 25 major ones in my life time.

The elite still tell us the seas are rising, but keep buying surfside estates.

Fly to 'carbon footprint' conferences in their private jets.

Tells us a nuclear war will end us all, as yearly arms sales skyrocket.

And of course ... 'More taxes will solve everything'

AND THE BAND PLAYED ON

It take special kind of stupid to believe any of it.

I remember back in '73', when we were running out of oil, and then a shortage of every other thing, as prices skyrocket. My brother worked at local hardware store, and everyday, a new sign over an item on the shelf ... 'price increase due to shortage'. Use to get a good laugh out of that.

'Damn if they didn't find oil & new supplies of all those things ... whew coffee1

Fool me once ... fool me twice .... DON'T THINK SO

It's just hard to believe that anyone can discuss the Doomsday Clock, the end of civilization, destruction wrought my mankind, and take themselves seriously as a supporter of Donald Trump.

He is the most destructive man on the planet right now and likely the most dangerous.

I'm surprised we're all still alive, after his first term as president. 4 years of sh!tting myself for no reason.

November 2025, the wife went out and stocked up on Depends, so we can no longer park the car in the garage.

Damn you Harris ... loser

400,000 didn't survive his first term. The economy didn't survive his first term. It was a <deleted>ty 4 years of Trump's term. He is not doing any better this term. Let's hope he don't dragged the country into an unnecessary war.

He killed 400k and got away with it ... cool

Biden double that count ... bastard.

Truman sucks, dropped a couple A bombs and pales by those counts.

Come on USA, surely we can do better.

GO TRUMP / HITLER as the disillusioned like to call him.

Need to adopt Obama slogan ... 'YES WE CAN'

On that, 'YES WE CAN' ... you can credit Obama & Fauci for all the covid deaths, as they authorized the grant (2014) to Wuhan for gain of function research on SARS. ... IMHO

GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE

All humans need 3 things to sustain life food, water and air/oxygen destroy or lose any one and we all die.

That could occur naturally, by overpopulation, by global warming, by nuclear conflicts, or any other catastrophe natural or otherwise.

Could perhaps someone invent a weapon far more devastating than nuclear weapons that had unintended consequences.

Just because something hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it never will who would ever have thought man would fly or travel faster than the speed of sound for instance.

"Approximately 66 million years ago, a massive asteroid, about 10 to 15 kilometers (6 to 9 miles) in diameter, struck Earth off the coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. This event, known as the Chicxulub impact, is the primary cause of the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) mass extinction, which wiped out all non-avian dinosaurs and about 75% of all species on Earth."

A total collapse of the food chain caused by an asteroid impact or man made weapons could plunge the world into a cold, dark, and toxic environment.

We are all subject to external forces some we can hopefully control others we have no control over and are completely at their mercy. Life is a very fragile thing.

Best to make a joke of it and laugh it off after all it will never happen will it.

What they do not specify is that each second represents maybe half a billion years of our time.

So nothing to do with China and India. You are crazy. Admit it. 90% of posts about Trump.

Got a long way to go, before they can destroy enough of the earth to make it uninhabitable. Doesn't even take into consideration an existence like 'Water World'

The previous government aka Trump mishandled the pandemic and takes the blame for more deaths. The wrecked economy was better handled by the steady hands of Biden. Trump will wreck the economy again and leave the mess to the next Democratic adminstration. That's the pattern that keep repeating.

You sure, as I did give credit, where credit is due.

Here's a thought, (IMHO) Obama & Fauci have movie night, and afterwards ,,,

... "Great movie. Hey Barack, got an idea, want to be a multi millionaire. How about giving me (NIH) a grant to give to EcoHealth Alliance, to study coronaviruses, at Wuhan Institute of Virology." ...

Obama and Fauci are not in the business of grifting and retribution.

Not sure what that has to do with 2014 grants the I mention. They both profited very nicely with their time in govt service ... IMHO
