Who's the oldest falang with a Thai drivers licence?

Featured Replies

My Thai car licence expires in 2028, at which time I'll be 86, will I be eligible for a new one if I can pass the test?

Interested to know who is the oldest falang among members to still have a drivers licence?

Although this is slightly off topic isn't it time that we start referring to ourselves as foreigners? I don't get overly offended by the word farang, or falang, but I do think that it's a bit impolite

Call yourself whatever you want. You are still farang to Thai people.

80 …renewed mine a few weeks go … will I be around in another 5 years ………

Is there any additional testing, or increased frequency of testing, once you get past a certain age ?

Yeah, I just missed out 🙁

80 and a little bit, got my Thai licence for another 5 years.

Was a small problem as upcountry they only had the 5 questions to be answered in Thai language. Did the first few but one had me stumped so I asked the supervisor and she asked her friend and 3 altogether chimed in. They didn't know the answer either. We had a joint discussion to answer the other questions.

The biggest problem is renewing my overseas country licence as the overseas beauracrats wouldn't accept the Thai drs fitness certificate. So my overseas licence is put on temp cancellation until the Thai dr fills in a 3 page questionairre which they are reluctant to do...working on it.

I submitted a detailed eye examination which they accepted but the Thai dr just gave me a certificate the says HEALTHY which my home country wouldn't accept.

It gets worse at 82, need to do a driving test too, then every 2 years I think.

I don't get overly offended by the word farang, or falang, but I do think that it's a bit impolite, as it does mean total outsider which we're not. In many other cultures we would consider to be one of them, after 10, 20, or 30 years, and after contributing massively to the local economies.

A significant group of my friends much prefer the word foreigner.

If you were issued one 30 years ago and you still had it at 90 doesn't mean you're still driving.

Mother in law has a life time licence, interesting thing is she's never driven a car in her life.

I renewed mine recently here in Pattaya. I will be 90 when it expires and hopefully still able to drive!

I'm only 71. One guy, posted recently, 84 and still driving. I might need to tend to a cataract soon, and will find out end of this year I think, when renewing license. See how that depth perception test goes 🙄

I better apply to renew early, JIC

If you are getting cataract/s removed, if you see the right people they will stitch in new lenses and your vision should be perfect again. :)

My wife has one too and she just under 70 yrs old.

In those days it was a little easier to get your licence, infact she got her licence and then learnt to drive. :)

Our insurance broker at the time said to get the licence first so that if she had an accident while learning there would be no problems.

I have a lifetime driving license.

They were the norm for Thais and PRs up until 2003 when the DLT stopped issuing them altogether.

I turned in the old paper license for the current plastic one about eight or ten years ago. The paper one was deteriorating.

The ones who kill the most youngsters on motorbikes and then say they were too young to drive.

In Australia have to get a medical at 75 to maintain a licence.

For good reason.

Got the cataract surgery done in August. I have to renew in the next couple of months. Getting the surgery was one of the best things I've ever done. I'm very happy with the results.

You have to get a medical in Thailand every time you apply.

I seriously doubt that even one person in my village refers to me as "foreigner." Khun. More often than not, Luang. Many times Khun Farang, Luang Farang, Puu Farang, Dtaa Farang, or just Farang. I'm pushing two decades here - I'm not offended and I don't care.

Yea, nobody has ever called me a foreigner, or even expat. Not sure why they would, or how and why, I would refer to myself as a foreigner. I've referred to myself as 'guest', as that's all we are here.

I'm just LA ... oh, and my pronouns are obvious. Singular, possessive, never plural, as I'm unique, and only one of me.

I'm 82 now and renewed my car and motorbike licenses last year in CM.

No problems.

However, it would be typical of Thailand if there were different requirements at different regional DLT offices.

Plus driving test every 2 years after 85.

Blood pressure test is hardly a medical!
