City Named 'Prostitution Capital' with Girlfriends Selling Sex for £12

Deep within the tropical allure of Thailand lies Pattaya, notoriously dubbed "Sin City." Known as the global epicentre of sex tourism, this city is often described as "the biggest brothel in the world." Despite the Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act of 1996 making prostitution illegal, enforcement is inconsistent, allowing Pattaya's massive sex industry to thrive.

Efforts by police and politicians to clean up Pattaya's streets have faltered against the sheer number of gogo bars, massage parlours, brothels, and sex clubs that thrive in the city. Incredibly, these establishments offer services at prices as low as £12. In Pattaya, sex workers can be hired for a “short time” or transform into “rentable girlfriends” who accompany clients throughout their visit.

Estimates suggest over 27,000 sex workers advertise their services across Pattaya, surpassing other notorious destinations like Barcelona and the Dominican Republic. The city's reputation as the 'prostitution capital' is unparalleled.

Malee, a pseudonym for a local "lady of the night," shares her experience working in Pattaya. At 33, she has been involved in a paid relationship with a British truck driver, receiving £100 monthly as part of their arrangement. Malee describes how this relationship developed into a serious bond, with the driver considering relocation to Thailand due to lower living costs and a welcoming culture.

She recounted how he sent her THB 5,000 (£114) each month, and even THB 40,000 (£915) for a motorbike. During his visits, he spent time at her bar, integrating into her routine before meeting her family. Their relationship progressed to an engagement, with plans for a January wedding coinciding with Malee's birthday.

However, their journey faced hurdles. Malee opened up about the complexities of balancing personal relationships within her line of work. Despite the potential move and cultural affinity, challenges remained.

Pattaya's reality reflects a complex juxtaposition of transactional relationships and genuine connections. While the sex industry dominates, it also highlights broader societal and economic factors at play.

As tourists flock to the city, they encounter a mix of pleasure and the stark realities faced by those working in this lucrative yet shadowy industry. Pattaya remains a symbol of the untamed complexity of human desires interwoven with cultural and economic realities.

Key Takeaways

  • Over 27,000 sex workers operate in the city.

  • Personal stories reveal the intricate dynamics of transactional relationships.

In the 27,000 sex workers figure, are the wives and girlfriends included?

Really? Where? That sounds like prices from 20 years ago.

Barcelona? I was there recently. Saw nothing like it. Maybe you mean Berlin or Hamburg. Germany has the most prostitution in Europe, where it's legal.

Why don't they distribute it across different parts of the country instead of putting all the eggs in one basket in Pattaya?

If sex tourists stop visiting, the economy of Pattaya takes a beating.

It's not a resilient business model for a city, if you ask me.

It's lasted over 60 years.

But prostitution is much older and more established in Thailand than the tourist sex trade. It is a pillar of Thai culture.

Are you going to start crying as you often do? So when are you heading to Pattaya again yourself to enjoy those pillars of Thai culture there?

Good idea to carefully check your policy in advance. Often they don't cover for ladyboy 69s gone wrong though.

I understand that you're feeling offended, and I truly apologize for that. However, it's important to consider the reasons that draw you to Pattaya in the first place.

Your behavior was unkind, and I encourage you to take a moment to apologize. Acknowledging this can really help mend feelings and build understanding.

"It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so f***ing what." Stephen Fry

It's a bit sad , that you think I go for "paid services" just as a work colleague joked when he said "sure you are George " when I said I was going back to do research and statistics

"Research ? They joked , George is going there for research ?

"We know what your researching George they joked thinking it was a funny comment

Sorry I didn't find it funny, and I quickly walked away

I vary rarely leave my Airbnb condo , I don't like crowds or drunken young farangs

I prefer to read books and do my statistics when I'm in Pattaya

Personally I think it's disgusting these elderly man with women young enough to be their granddaughters

I believe Pattaya would flourish without the sex trade. It is one hour from bangkok and 45 minutes from Suvarnabhumi on a good day, and honestly many do not visit Pattaya because of its reputation!

So if Pattaya clean up, it will be a great destination for many more who have money to spend on everything else than a ST.

You'll be in good company. That's exactly what everyone else goes there for too. In fact, there is absolutely nothing else to do there besides reading and compiling statistics. Makes total sense, fly half way around the world to count the number of dental clinics with the word "smile" in the name. Perhaps the best use of time and money ever imaginable. You could also just ask ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini or Perplexity for the list and never leave your mop.

What would you go there for exactly? The pristine beaches, temples, and fresh markets? Though let's not forget the lovely cabaret shows, the steroid culture, the brawls, and the motorcycle gangs. You must have also seen that lovely dump of black sewer water they released into the ocean there last week as well. Paradise!

So why are you going to Pattaya? Chiang Mai or Khon Kaen is where you should be going.

Beaches of spain was a clean sewer as well back in the days, and they recovered, so anything is possible.

Everyone I know, loves Hua Hin, and I didnt really thought it was that great when I lived there, but to my friends it was a nice change from every other destination they knew, and not to forget exotic. Location is everything, and Pattaya do have the perfect location, and got the infrastructure needed. Just need to clean up the a bit,

To enjoy Pattaya you really need transportation and to head further south. If you remove the hotels/restaurants/nightlife the main areas of Pattaya really have nothing to offer.
