Actually a challenge the Romans encountered 1500 years ago. Their Legions were analogous to Regiments; originally raised based on the place they were from. The war generation felt let down but that opinion didn't appear suddenly in the 21st century. I dare say it was present almost immediately; it was certainly present from the '60s onwards. If I had a pound for every time that I heard my father say that, "The country's gone to the dogs", then I would have more money than Elon Musk.

Our major cities have always had problems. You obviously didn't live in (South) London in the '70s and '80s. Street crime was rampant, signs of decay were everywhere. The area today bears no resemblance to what it was. It is much improved.
