Europe cops ? Europe is not one country !

There are

44 countries in Europeaccording to the United Nations. While most European police carry handguns, many have patrol officers equipped with or having immediate access to submachine guns or automatic rifles (often described as machine guns by the public) for security, including in Germany, France, Italy, and Switzerland

It's deeply troubling to consider that police forces in Germany, France, Italy, and Switzerland feel compelled to carry machine guns to ensure public safety. This raises significant questions about the state of security and trust within European societies.

These offenders need counselling,I don't like to see anyone punished as such

Last year I was brutally attacked in Lopburi in Thailand after trying to take a picture and sitting next to the offender where I received a sharp fast slap on the back of my head resulting in long lasting PTSD

The detective who later that night came to my motel room asked me what I wanted to do when they caught the offender

I immediately said some type of counselling

You previously stated that you were "almost" brutally attacked. What led to the change in your perspective?

Ah, so you support Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden facing a firing squad. I would also say Kamala Harris but I don't support killing mentally challenged people.

I can promise you the German, France, Italy and Swiss police have a lot trust among their citizens, and we do respect the police here in Europe.

They are disciplined and professionals we trust. No finger trigger happy accidents here.

Accidents happens, but not as often as we constantly reminded of over there.

In the future, I would appreciate it if you could focus on my original post rather than making criticisms of the USA. Let's keep the conversation constructive.

Im sorry, but my reply was to an American, and you replied to me and expect me to change focus?

I actually edited my reply, since it stands good without the usa bashing.

Your response completely overlooked the main point of my post and instead focused on an unnecessary critique of the USA. I encourage you to enhance your reading comprehension so we can engage in a more constructive dialogue.

I think you misunderstand the history of police forces. Within Europe, on the Irish police, the GB police and Gibalterian police are not routinely armed. In Northern Ireland, the police are routinely armed. Around the rest of the world, only a few countries have police who are not armed routinely. These include New Zealand, Iceland, Bermuda, the Falklands, Botswana, BVI, and a scattering of mostly former British Commonwealth countries in the Pacific and Indian oceans. For all other countries (more complex in those with Gendarmes), an armed police officer is the de facto position. Its less to do with concern for public security, and more to do with tradition. Sir Robert Peel is attributed to the concept of the modern police force. His concept was to establish a civilian alternative to the army to maintain law and order. Central to his Peelian principles was policing by consent and public trust, where officers would use persuasion, advice, and warning, not the rifle and the bayonet. His major concern was that the police should not be seen as a tool of oppression, and so his Metropolitian Police Force was deliberately not armed.

Peel did not invent policing. The Police, in various guises, have existed for centuaries. Chadwick came up with the term preventative policing in the 1820s; surprisingly, no one had thought of this before, preventing crime and infractions. Peel established prevention as the principle purpose of the Metropolitian Police. Simply, British policing has a wholly different tradition from the rest of the non-Anglo world, where the police were essentially an oppressive arm of the state, an armed alternative to the army. Before Peel, we had things like the Peterloo riots, which were dealt with by the army, and a massacre. The army was seen as a tool of oppression of the crown. Hence Operation Banner was a complete 40 year balls up. Thats not to say Peel always stuck to his principles; he sent armed police to Ireland for instance.

So the police elsewhere have always been armed, as a natural state of affairs, rather than as any specific response to a threat. Armed in the same sense that soldiers would naturally be armed.
