Airfare Surge: Bangkok–London Economy Reaches 70,000 Baht

Typical of Thailand and Thai Airways. Funny isnt it that I was quoted 71,000 baht on Monday because of "airspace" from Thai Airways yet Vietnam from Hanoi was only 32,000 return. Maybe they use different airspace or just that Thai are scammers. Either way I and I hope many others will never fly Thai again!

It's the same as CX from BKK, via Hong Kong to the UK. Last week when I booked, it was 28,300 o/w, at the start of this week it was 135,00 for the same flight. Now nothing is available.

Just checked your Hanoi flights for tomorrow and there's nothing available too, but CX will still get you from there to LHR for about 62,000.

THAI bashers again...smh.

It seems to escape your understanding what TACO means. Are you struggling to understand that the going to war with Iran is the polar opposite of "chickening out"?

Eventually fould a flight from Phuket to LHR with Air Astana for this Saturday at just over 20,000 baht.

Cracking airline. Last time I flew with them to Europe, instead of paper towels, they had cloth hand towels hanging from hooks in the toilets. They were in a pretty awful state by the end of the flight. They also handed out headphones but there was no IFE.

For the meal service, they served exactly the same menu three times.

For 20k baht, it will be interesting if in-flight service has improved, but at present, beggars can't be choosers so have a safe flight.

So which of the following major terrorist organisations do USA or Israel sponsor. Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthi??? And which of those on October 7th launched a major attack on Israeli citizens. Did Israel do it to itself or did its main ally USA??

Now would you like another think about what country that might be - then look in the mirror for who the real "idiot" might be. 🥴

Then you don’t understand trading markets- they are based on what markets judge the price will be at a given point in the future. With 20% of the global oil supply choked off via the closure of the straits of Hormuz (40% of the Asian supply comes through that route) there’s going to be a significant shortage of supply. Would you sell something at the price it was yesterday when you KNOW it’s going to be much more expensive a few weeks down the road ?

I understand trading markets are driven by greed, and not on the basis of fair profit. But sadly the western world is now ruled by greed, and I would prefer a world with a little more fairness in it, and the opportunity for the downtrodden citizens to get a better deal.

I just did a test query on Kayak for one way on 14 March to London. Excluding flights with stops in the ME, there are two flights via Chongking at THB 24,000, all the others are above 40,000.

THA at 54/56,000

Don't worry guys. Calm down. I expect the Orange Man will soon lower prices by 800%, 900% or even 1,000%.

At least they fed you. Hope you had a lot of hand sanitizer with you when you used the restroom.

This was before Covid and hand sanitizer hadn't been invented yet.

Typical Thai. Greedy fukas

Typical Thai basher, cherry-picking the narrative despite ALL airlines going mercenary at the moment.

BTW, I saw four Emirates A380's parked up on the stands at BKK this morning. That's must be costing them a fortune too.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports plans to provide financial assistance to international tourists stranded in Thailand by global airspace closures because of the Middle East crisis.

Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Sports Natthriya Thaweevong explained that the ministry had set up the Foreign Tourists Assistance Fund, with a regulation allowing initial compensation of 2,000 baht per day for each tourist for force majeure cases, such as airspace closures and travel disruptions. The regulation allows compensation up to a total of 20,000 baht per person.

Yes, not surprising that all carriers would do this (the ones not flying via ME airports). I got lucky by pure fluke in booking a flight (not via ME) to Europe just 2 days before the attacks. I checked again yesterday and the same flight - while still available - had a fare jump of 34,000 baht (extra). I'm not travelling for several weeks though, so the fares may calm down after this initial shock has passed and the other carriers add capacity. Let's hope so - it's still low season for Europe. Bad news for Thailand though regarding Middle East inbound travellers now lost.

OK, and what if the prices are very different? because the claim is not accurate,

A very misleading article, and some very misinformed comments.

Last minute flights are almost always the most expensive tickets. It's called dynamic pricing. The fares are full fares. It has always been this way and has nothing to do with the conflict.

You can check for yourself. A roundtrip economy from London to Bangkok remains inexpensive. Some of the flights are direct. For example March 18- April 23.

Oman £865

Air France £901

KLM £922

EVA Air £972

THAI £1,048

SWISS, THAI £1,224

Turkish Airlines £1,291

Austrian £2,061

That's good news for many folks if true.

However, with all the ME airlines not flying the London- Bangkok route there must be a lot of people in the UK and northern Europe, plus in Thailand wishing to return, who are presently flightless and looking for alternatives.

Wouldn't that push prices up?

Feel free to visit Google flights and see for yourself.

The cost of an airfare is relatively unchanged. A single routing is usually more expensive than a RT. Putting that aside, we are now entering shoulder season, and will soon be in low season. That means more capacity. The demand is more December- January, with demand slowly decreasing in the following months. One way with well regarded Hainan is £368

THB 15,585 on March 18.

I've got a return BKK-DOH-MAN flight booked for an 8 week trip to the UK from 28th March with Qatar (paid 86,000 for Business Class) so since the weekend have been looking at alternative flights that avoid the middle east & the cheapest Business Class I could find (Mixture of Thai & Turkish) was approx 235,000, cheapest economy ticket (IIRC it was with KLM) was 67,200.

If my flights do get cancelled I will see if I can get Qatar to book me on an alternative carrier (my dates are pretty fixed & the option of pushing them back 2 weeks doesn't work for me), if not I'll take a refund (or vouchers) & change my trip to September.

86,000 baht for business class return that was a cheap deal compared to Eva Air, I think I paid 76k for premium economy class and upgraded to business with airmails. That was March 2025 until 8 September 2025.

I will have a look at that airline in 1.5 years time if the war in the middle east has been solved by then.

Have you flown with them before?

Good luck with finding the replacement flight at a good price.

But the passengers in question are not flying the route you quoted, they are starting their return journey in Bangkok to Europe, I know of someone struggling to buy a ticket from Bangkok to Frankfurt, their return ticket should have been on the 10th March via the middle east.

Even if they stay one month extra in their house in Thailand they will still have to pay 55k baht for a single flight in tourist class.

But there are lots of tickets selling for 19k baht, but that is via the middle east 😀

Still costing them no doubt but two of them have been running, as the BKK-HKG-BKK flights have continued and the DXB-BKK flight that continues on to SIA or DAD has operated yesterday and today.

I’ll take that bet- shall we say 50k baht.?

It’s called dynamic pricing and is based on supply and demand - the same as anything including air fares. You’ve had an entire chunk of significant supply removed (the ME airline routes ) and the demand remains and is channeling to carriers not using that route. Once the ME routes are restored supply will be created and fares will drop to reflect that.

Gonna put your money where your mouth is..?

No he will not I bet, but it will still not stop people like him moaning at what goes on in Thailand every chance they get, they do not understand how any market/commodity is driven by simple supply and demand. 😃

Have flown with Qatar many times & can usually score a Business class round trip for about this price max 110K.

For approx. the same price I've flown Eva & Gulf Air which are great airlines, I used to fly Finnair a lot but since the war in Ukraine started their BKK-HEL flights miss their 1 connecting flight to MAN so it can take > 30 hours!!!

Also used to fly Turkish/Emirates a lot but nowadays you're looking at >130K, too rich for my blood.

Good, airfares have been far too affordable and it has let in many naughty tourists.
