Thai Motorcyclist Killed by Foreign Driver in Phuket Pickup Truck Collision

Featured Replies

A tragic traffic accident occurred in Chalong, Phuket, where a foreign woman crashed a pickup truck into two motorcycles, resulting in the death of a Thai man and injuring another rider on March 25. The incident, which happened around 5pm, was captured in a video now circulating on Thai social media. The pickup, driven by the foreign woman, swerved into the opposite lane, colliding with the motorcycles before crashing into an electricity pole.

The identities of those involved have not yet been disclosed. A foreign man in the pickup was seen assisting the female driver out of the vehicle post-crash, leading to a roadside argument. Witnesses stopped to offer aid and contacted rescue services and the police.

Local authorities have yet to determine the crash's cause. The male motorcyclist was declared dead at the scene, while another suffered a broken leg. This incident has sparked online discussions, emphasizing concerns about justice for the victims. There is apprehension that foreign suspects might attempt to avoid legal consequences by paying off proceedings, or leaving the country before resolution.

In response, some social media users are urging government agencies to implement stricter measures to curb reckless driving by foreigners in Phuket, citing previous incidents involving non-local drivers, reported The Thaiger.

This is one item I don't think anyone can play the race card. I do a lot of riding and see no regard for rules or safety from all skin colours. I've lost count of the amount of times I have seen a pickup upside down on the side of the road with a bemused Thai standing next to it.

There is already a Police Force that is more often than not happy to sit and wait around to fine only foriegners whilst Thais ride past breaking all kinds of rules.

The other thing to note from the video is it doesn't matter how well you ride and how good your road smarts are. If you think you have got accustomed to everyone running red lights, pulling out in front of you without a care or taking 3 lanes to corner it doesn't matter. When some knob like this comes crashing into you from nowhere you're number is up regardless.

I think the investigation after blood test will get a lead.

Its also important to know what caused the truck to veer in such a manner. Something could have happened before the start of the video. Im not excusing anything just need all the facts before jumping to conclusion like this poster has....

Trying to do a sudden U-Turn.

Whatever made her turn to the right she did so without looking.

Hmm, advise ... not such a quick judgement". How many times have we had a motorcycle pull out from a side venue without looking causing us to try and viand hitting them. All I am saying is... not so quick on the draw here ...

Not too xenophobic are they?

Plenty of poor driving to go around here in the land of smiles.

thank you for playing, but there is a greater chance she saw a ghost and swerved to avoid it than your U-turn hypothesis.

What was discusting was how the male in the pickup chose to argue with the female driver instead of helping the Thai riders.

Dropped a boiling cup of coffee into her lap?

Something sudden and drastic such as this.

Other than this, possibly a mechanical failure of the truck.

For example, if a bearing were to suddenly seize on the right wheel, then this would suddenly lock the wheel, causing the truck to veer in a turn, very similar to what we are seeing in the video.

This is not just texting and driving but something that cause a very sudden hard turn, at maximum turn rate, to the right, and also KEPT THE RIGHT front wheel fully turned, as well.

How odd.

How tragic.

There is mention of an argument when they got out the truck. Perhaps it started inside before the crash and caused the sudden swerve. Pure speculation.

The trick looks fairly new, I’m doubting any kind of mechanical cause

It looks like she was coming in at speed compared to the driver in front. Possibly braking too hard and lost control.

If you look carefully, the wheels were already locked-up before the truck slid into oncoming traffic and into the bikers.

Have you seen the video? Motorcycle proceeding in the right direction on the correct side of the road and in by the curb, not near the white line in the middle.

Pick up truck proceeding on the opposite side of the road in a straight line, suddenly performs a screaming right turn crossing to the opposite side of the road and ends up facing the other way and off the opposite road lane. Taking out two motorbikes on the way.

What has “motorbikes pulling out from a side venue” got to do with this particular case?

If you watch carefully, the guy who opens the door to argue with her was sat in the back of the pick-up

It’s notable that they continued arguing after the accident, ignoring the plight of the people she hit.

My money is on a major domestic argument taking place in the truck resulting in some kind of physical interaction that caused her to slam on the brakes while turning the wheel, with or without interference from the male she was arguing with.

But there are other possibilities

Grabbed her from behind causing her to yank the wheel to the right?

No I mean it looked like he was sat in the bed of the pick-up (i.e. outside of the cab)

Ahh I see. Good spot. I couldn’t make that bit out.

In which case, it is all on her. For whatever reason she made a manic right turn. Dropped her phone, bent down to pick it up, causing her right hand to pull to the right, looked up, panicked, slammed brakes on hard, skidded across the road?

Who knows other than her.

I have to laugh at the motorcycle going the wrong way up the carriageway that had to brake reasonably heavily to stop from slamming into the guy. No danger of actually hitting but they were going a fair old pace up the wrong carriage way. No mention of that from Thai netizens I wager
