Thai Driving Licence - Pattaya, Recent Experiences?

I want to get my Thai Driving Licence in Pattaya. I know all the docs required etc but does anyone know if they are making you sit the tests at the moment if you have a UK Licence?

I dont have an international licence which apparently makes it easier i.e no tests. Can anyone confirm this?

Do any local companies provide a service to obtain the licence on your behalf?

Thanks

As far as I know you still have to sit the test and do the color vision test, even with an international license. The test is simple and if you don't pass it you should not be allowed to drive anyway, for everyones safety :o

You will still need to watch a video; take a written test ( 20 questions as i remember); take a color difference test; depth perception test but will not need to do a driving test - plan on getting there early and spending the whole morning - this will get you a one year license - when i went back for the 5 year license i just had to fill out the paperwork - no tests required

On Phuket you dont have to do either the written tests or the driving test (just eyes / colorblind and depth perception, and the reaction tests) if you have an International driving permit.. They were not acccepting a UK license when I went.

They were however accepting those pony IDL's you can buy online for a few dollars.. So easy to buy one to avoid the test. :o

got my license in Pattaya about 6 weeks ago. no written test, no video watching. tests i had to do was colour, reaction and lining up two bars in a lit box from a distance of ~5-6m.

had a Thai with me to fill forms and guide me where to go. otherwise i would have been completely lost. not a single word in english on any signs :D

addendum: i don't have an international license and the german embassy in BKK hat to certify that my german license acquired in 1961(!) was still valid and never expires. you can imagine what my schoolboy picture in the license looks like :o

So what is this 20 questions test and can you play someone in Pattaya to give you the right answers ?

I heard a rumour that it is a machine now any truth in this ?

It is 30 questions and not 20. I had to take the test for my motorcyle license as my international license did not have a provision for motorcycles. The computer test is the same for bikes and cars. They let you study from a book in English before the test and after you take the test the computer will give you the correct answers of the questions you missed. Very helpful as I failed the first time then turned right around and took it again and passed. You will also have to take a driving test if you do not have an international license.

Only having a UK licence myself and no International Permit I had to do the full monty, watch video, eye tests, practical driving test and written test.

Written test is now done on a machine, 30 questions of which you must get 24 right.

Driving test is done around a car park outside.

If you fail you can sit it again next day.

I have the old green UK licence so don't know if it's just that was not acceptable or ALL national licences.
