So it's goodbye from him (Martin Jol) I presume.

Got me thinking about teams too good to go down. Our own beloved was one , Notts Forest another (who actually went down and down) :o Manu , Chelsea and Leeds all ust have been considered as being that in their time as well.

So does anyone actually believe the cliche' ? I mean third from bottom and one third of the season gone doesn't actually look too bright does it ?

Too good to go down ?

No such thing as "too good to go down"

The table don't lie........

Spot On...

Now for another "Mutual consent" BS, or is it gonna be a good old sacking? :o

Nottingham Forest certainly weren't too good to go down, I can vouch for that. Cloughie was still at the helm but even the great man himself couldn't stop the slide. Ok, Frank Clark got us back up & good old Dave Bassett did it as well. David Platt was the reason we ended up going down even further. He spent millions on rubbish & put us in financial trouble which left us no option but to sell all our best players. The chairman of the time should also take responsibility for letting him spend all that cash. I suppose we could have run away from our debts like Leeds did ! Only now are we starting to emerge from all the debt & are moving forward.

If you look at the table, it's pretty much 2 from 7 now, if you consider as I do that Derby are already gone.

So we have Fulham, Sunderland, Reading, Wigan, Spurs, Middlesborough and Birmingham. All clubs that have spent a reassonable amount of money (other than Reading) and are unable to string a bunch of results together.

As the saying goes "It's a good team on paper, but football's played on grass". Spurs, have to get going soon or otherwise they will go down, it really does become difficult to break that losing habit once the doubts set in and the confidence goes. At present they deserve to be where they are, as already been said "the table don't lie".

What will probably save Spurs this year, is that there is a fair amount of good competition for being crap, and for me Wigan will go for sure, along with one from Sunderland, Reading (sorry TP) or Boro.

I don't think Reading will go down, I have a feeling for Fulham & Sunderland to join D***y :o:D in the championship next season

Forest promoted, Derby relegated. You'll be a very happy man at the end of the season. :D

Yep, will be very happy. Persoally I've had enough of playing Yeovil , Cheltenham etc.

BTW......no bars open on your day off Toadie :o:D I'm glad they've switched our holiday to this coming Saturday. :D

Thanks for reminding me, I had planned to go out with mrstoad this evening, but looks like not much point now. I suppose I had enough last night anyway, those ciders certainly cleared up my cold. :D

That's the question isn't it. Can the Spuds dig themselves out of their present hole. They have got to (and will) change manager and that's a given. By all accounts they performed like a side not playing for him, low on confidence and generally crap -- especially in defence, And this after spending 50 (fifty) million on building their side.

We've seen similar lashing it out left right and centre only to hit the fan (no pun intended, but that's who it hits as well - the fan) especially at Leeds. Even with a new manager, whoever it is, it's going to take time to sort out the mess that they're in. And as you say that unless they can get results soon -- the next two against Blackburn at home and Bolton away ain't gonna be easy -- then if they're still struggling come the New Year ...?

Now, I'm not one to gloat, but they could well be the suprise package to go down. :o

Conversely, a team that wasn't expected to last when they came up , Pompey, have not only established themselves but would be my outside bet for the coveted fourth place in the PL this season.

There's no sure thing in football. Except perhaps that Benitez won't last at Liverpool. But that's just my hunch.

Funny you should mention Benitez, but Chavy, myself and another red were discussing that last night over a few beers. I think that his time is starting to run out as well, probably a make or break season for Rafa to. A lot of money spent, and still no noticeable improvement. If they get knocked out early in Europe you get the feeling that will be pretty much it, cos Rafa still doesn't seem to have "got" the EPL yet.

Too good to go down ?

Another team that you could say were too good to go down were Middlesbourgh in 97. That was the year they reached 2 cup finals and had great players like Juninho, Ravanelli and Emerson.

Looking at Tottenham last night they're defending was shocking with Dawson in particular being very poor. However a team with a strikeforce of Keane and Berbatov should be too good to go down. :D

I know many people have already written Derby as they look too crap to stay up. But if they won 2 games they would be in mid table. That just goes to show how tight it is at the bottom.

That's the biggest IF this season :o , but you are right. 9 in the mix at present.

On the contary mrtoad , although all Liverpool fans would be far from happy if we got knocked out in the group stages of the champions league it just might turn out to be a blessing in disguise :D .

It would stop "tinkerman" from changing our team too much and put all his efforts into winning the premiership , which is the one trophy the Liverpool fans want , thats what Rafa doesn't "get". He has come from la liga in Spain were the champions league is more important than the domestic league.

Back to the topic , there is still a long way to go this year in the EPL and I do believe that spurs are " too good " to go down :o .

Their problem is the same as we had when we had the likes of Carrick and Cole playing, i.e. Missing a few key defenders. But I'm not sure that King is going to make that much difference when he gets back ?

Still , full marks to Curbs for bumping up the price of Darren Bent. :o
