I have just been on the phone to my g/f(shes from Khon Kaen). We are getting married in the new year, its taken us a while to get everything ironed out preparations etc.She has just told me that we have to go to the British Consul in Bangkok to get some sort of certificate before we get married in Khon Kaen. She will be coming to the UK to live with me but not in the immediate future.I would have thought that the fact we got married in Khon Kaen would have been enough, what would be the point in going to Bangkok.I need as much info as poss guys,i need guys from the UK that have got married in Thailand, dont understand the need to go to Bangkok.Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks Maz

Google UK Embassy Bangkok and read the information about getting married.

All have to obtain a paper from there Embassy that they are not married/bio data type information and that is then translated into Thai and then registered with the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs making it a legal document. Only after you have that paper will a district office provide the marriage service. It will likely take several days to complete that phase. The marriage itself should be done in an hour or less if there are no problems.

Maz,

I remembered your last question where you got quite a few responses, although I don't know whether it helped as you never replied.

I have just gone back and checked. You said you are getting married on the 6th Jan (the ceremony thing, and you don't understand that) and you want to get the completely separate legal side sorted out about the same time I presume.

There a whole raft of holidays (and other stuff ) coming up where government offices will be closed. I don't mean to be unhelpful, but you really do need to get the digit out :D

Can I suggest 2 things?

This is not a "this has been discussed 1000 times thing", but really all the information about this is on this site, use the search facility and you will get information much more quickly than waiting for responses. Download the "Affirmation of Freedom to Marry" where Lopburi3 suggests and get that filled in is also something you can do now.

Secondly, when are you getting into Thailand? You will be landing in the Swampyplace, so you can do what you need to do in BKK then, hopefully

Ohhh, and thirdly (yes I can't count :o ) if you still have questions by all means do ask. I'll try and find some good links for you on here unless somebody else can chip in sooner

Good luck with all this
