Spaniel Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 Thanks for all the replies to my other 'Digital Camera" post where I was deciding between Sony and Canon. I decided to get the Canon SD 750 for 13,990 at Carefour.
lopburi3 Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 That would be 9,300 baht at Pix-One (Canon IXUS 75 is the Asia model name).
Spaniel Posted December 21, 2007 Author Posted December 21, 2007 That would be 9,300 baht at Pix-One (Canon IXUS 75 is the Asia model name). Thanks for the info. So, why would someone buy the SD750 for B14,000 when the IXUS is available for B9300? I googled both and they look very similiar although I thought the SD750 was the nicer of the two. Also, where is Pix-One?
lopburi3 Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 I wrote about them in other thread. It is gray market so you get the guarantee from camera shop rather than manufacture and software (which most people don't need, may be in Japanese. The camera is the same. That SD750 name is used in the US market. The Pix-one that I shopped at was on 3rd floor of Fortune Town in the computer section but a larger shop is on second floor in the mobile phone area. This is currently the low price leader but there are others selling as prices close. Advise checking http://www.geetang.com/en/product/product_...1&p_id=5296 there is a list at bottom of prices at various outlets. That was also on my short list but felt the wide angle and Optical Stabilization of the Lumix for 1,000 baht less was what I wanted.

kat Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 I ended up buying a Canon SD 1000 today here in the states. I bought the camera for 188 USD, and after tax, a small camera case, and a 2GB SD card, I ended up paying 227 USD (just under 8,000 baht, I think). I looked at the SD 750K (for $219 USD), but for me there wasn't that much difference except that the LCD screen was 3.0 instead of 2.5. I'm happy. I started to get a Lumix with a 10x optical zoom for about 219 USD, but the 10x optical zoom was crap. I've heard great things about the Lumix, but wasn't impressed at the shop.
lopburi3 Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 That seems to be almost exactly the same as the gray market price here in Bangkok (7,700 baht for 1GB). That camera is called IXUS 70 here.
Nordlys Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Is there any way of telling that the camera you're buying is a grey market model at the point of purchase?
lopburi3 Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 They openly tell you that as they provide the guarantee. It is not a bait and switch type operation - if you want to pay for the official import they can sell you that at a much higher price. For those of us who live in Thailand and do not need an official guarantee it provides a large discount (in this country where the concept is not that common).
Maestro Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 You might also want to check out the IXUS 860 IS. http://www.geetang.com/en/product/product_...1&p_id=9007 I am off to Fortune Town in half an hour. Compared the Ixus 75 with the Ixus 860 IS but cannot quite figure out what the 860 IS gives me that the Ixus 75 does not. Anybody knows? -- Maestro
Tywais Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Compared the Ixus 75 with the Ixus 860 IS but cannot quite figure out what the 860 IS gives me that the Ixus 75 does not. Anybody knows? You can compare them here: Ixus 860 Ixus 75 //edit - sorry, just realized you said you did compare them.
Maestro Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Yes, it gives me a more detailed comparison. The basic difference seems to be that the lens of the 860 IS has a wider angle. -- Maestro
Nordlys Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 (edited) Compared the Ixus 75 with the Ixus 860 IS but cannot quite figure out what the 860 IS gives me that the Ixus 75 does not. Anybody knows? Wider zoom range (28-105mm vs. 35-105mm) Image stabilization on Ixus 860IS The difference is well worth extra money. Edited December 28, 2007 by Nordlys
Maestro Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Thanks. I’ll go and have a look at them now. Don’t really need another camera as I already have the Kodak DX6490 but I am tired of lugging it around when going on mountain hikes. I see that the Ixus 75 is smaller, though 5 g heavier. Difficult decision. -- Maestro
Maestro Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 I bought the Ixus 75, after all. -- Maestro
