I have experienced something like this too. Windows Media Player plays the video fine on the laptop but nothing but a black screen appears on the big screen. I have tried using VLC Media Player but I got the same result.

The only video format that worked both on the laptop screen and the big screen are the FLV files that I have playing on the FLV player.

What I've been doing as a workaround is to convert whatever video format that I need to play to FLV using Media Converter SA Edition.

Any easier solution is most welcome.

LCD what? Are you using a TV or a monitor? Analog or digital? Believe you need to advise for those with the knowledge to be able to advise you.

It's the LCD projector thingy that hangs from the ceiling...

I believe it's digital... (or I hope it is)

You need to tell the laptop to use the external monitor, time to get out the manual :o

It's usually a key marked "CRT/LCD", will probably cycle 'internal', 'internal+external', 'external'.

If you have a video card that's dual screen capable you should read the instructions to get the best from your setup :D

Hello Crossy,

On my laptop, the hotkeys for that is Fn+F4. That shifts the display to laptop display only, projector only, or both at the same time. I have tried doing this. This doesn't change how the video behaves. it will be displaying the video on my screen but just a black screen on the wall. It doesn't matter if I display it full screen or in a window.

Thanks anyhow.

I had a similar problem and there are 3 possibilities.

1) Wrong cable. I recommend an svga cable. You will know it because it will have a bulge(? capacitor) on both ends just before the connectors. Both ends need to be male. This is a 15 pin set up that viewed straight on is trapezoid shape.

2) Wrong resolution. The projector has a spec for the highest resolution it can receive. If you are sending a signal that is too high it will not display. 800x600 1024x768 and so on. Look at the box or manual that came with the projector and set accordingly. On Win XP right click on an open area of the desk top were there are no icons. Left click on properties. Left click on settings and you get a screen that has to boxes marked 1 and 2. Left click on box 2 and set the screen resolution slider accordingly. Apply and OK.

3) Wrong source. The back of the projector has several different plugs to accept different cables. Some projectors will automatically sense the signal others don't. On the remote there will be a button marked source. Each push will toggle between the different input jacks. Find the right one while a signal is being sent.

PM me if you have ay questions.

Number 2 is plausible.

I'll check this one out.

Thanks.

Download k-lite codec pack - search google. Its free, compact and includes Media Player Classic (3-2-1 Player). It plays absolutely everything. On any screen.

It is simply the best media player out there period. Thats my opinion anyways.

Go to (in media player): File -> View -> Options -> Performance, Video acceleration and lower the slider a couple of notches.

Acceleration only works for the primary display, on other devices it'll just render a black square instead.

Set it as high as possible for your situation (where it still works) :o

I have those and more. Those are great cross platform multimedia players but it doesn't make the video work on the big screen either. The video just shows up on the monitor but not on the screen

Hello :o

Here's a direct download link for the latest version of the K-Lite Codec Pack:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=4140&s=95

This IS free and includes pretty much every codec that exists. Great tool for watching all sorts of videos (after installing this, any file will play in any player).

Apart from that, if you have a problem with viewing video on an external screen check in the graphic driver's options for "Video Overlay" and set that to "clone mode" (this enables video output to either screen at the same time, by "video" i mean "moving video" such as, well, videos.... "how" depends on graphics driver), then it WILL work on external screens regardless what player software you use and what display mode (clone or extend).

As to "video player software", VLC is good but there'so ne out there that's a notch better than VLC - "GOM Player". Get it (free as well) from

http://www.gomplayer.com/download.html

It plays EVERYTHING from .avi to .rmvb (VLC will refuse to play certain files such as .rmvb) including the strangest formats and codecs. And the best thing - it does so using it's OWN codecs (like VLC too) and hence it's very fast and uses very little resources. Also GOM enables the adjustment of brightness, contrast etc even in Real Media files, something not even Real Player can :D And lastly, GOM can play (and seek within!!) incomplete video files of any format even WHILE YOU ARE STILL DOWNLOADING THEM.

Plus there's a skin available that makes it lokk just like WMP 11..... which is why i am using GOM now as my new default player under Vista :D

Best regards....
