Hello All,

I am starting to look in to purchase a new car and would appreciate some suggestions.

At the moment I have a Honda CRV which I bought new for 5 years ago.

The CRV have been running fairly well but have had some issues.

One of the things I do not like with the CRV is it's excessive fuel thirst and and would like to address that when purchasing a new car.

I would like to find a normal sedan car with a diesel engine. I have had enough with SUV's and Pickups and would like a normal small fuel efficient (diesel) car.

Any suggestions out there...??

The only two I can think of are:

Mercedes A180 with a 2 liter diesel, price 1,690,000 baht

Ford Focus also with a 2 liter diesel, price 1,055,000 baht

I just bought the Ford Focus TDCi, I can recommend that one, fuel economy, safety and road handling are great.

Hi North, I'm looking forward to hearing what you get for fuel consumption with the diesel focus, especially in city driving. How do you find acceleration through the gears? Bearing in mind your performance and fuel consumption won't be optimal yet as it's a new car. Does this focus only come in black? Would be nice if they produce other in different colours.

Hi culicine,

After I got the car I have been busy, but I will post some information on my experience with the Focus later today, but I can tell you now, the fuel consumption is low, and yes, unfortunately they will only sell it in black, at least for now.

Hi North,

I went in on Ford's homepage here in Thailand and looked at the Ford Focus TDCi. It looks more or less exactly what I am searching for. One question only.

I could not find out if this model could be delivered with automatic gearbox or not.

I am an lazy bugger and do most of my driving in city traffic so I prefer my cars to have automatic.

Do you know if it can be delivered with automatic gearbox..?

The Focus TDCi diesel you can only have with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

You can have basically the same car (Sport) with an automatic gearbox, but only with a 2 litre petrol engine.

If you don´t mind to spend the extra money and would like to have a Mercedes, the A180 comes with a CVT gearbox which is fine for city driving.

Hi North,

Too bad about the auto gearbox. I wonder why they do not have it as an option ??

I think the Mercedes A180 is far too expensive compared to how much car you get.

It's probably a nice car but too small and too expensive.

Hi North, OK looking forward to your observations. My current car isn;t too old, so won't be replacing it just yet, but it's nice to know we can get a decent diesel sedan now in LoS. Hopefully it will be popular and go into a higher production model later (possibly with a dsg-style gearbox, wouuld be the ultimate), with some other colours. The top gear in the 6 speed is apparently very tall (1500rpm at 100km/h??) so should give good economy at highway speeds.

Things are on the up with ford focus tdci.

Now comes in 4 or 5 door and a few colour options, also ghia or sport trim.

The brilliant 6 speed gearbox has been changed to a 6 speed auto with manual select option, test after test says the car is returning the same economy as the manual car - now that is just perfect in my eyes.

European reviews are raving about this car, voted best car in Germany 2 years running, there's an accomplishment.

What's the connection between your website and the Focus? Or is there not supposed to be?

North - did you manage to sell your baby?
