Why Is True Censoring The Net?

Yes that is the question why is True censoring the net when other ISP's are not, is it because the owner feels some moral oblilgation to help protect the "virtue" of his/her customers? I had surmised that what they are doing is illlegal as recent posting here have suggested that to block particular sites one needed a court order. Are True above the law?

True, and nearly every other ISP in Thailand, have some form of censoring in place at the request of the police. The *only* ISP which does not censor is Inet-Thailand.

Each ISP, however, blocks a different subset of sites, as they are not sharing a database. So while you might be able to see a site on one ISP, there's no guarantee that it will be available on another ISP.

Sites which are supposedly being blocked are porn, gambling, sites which are disrespectful to the monarchy, and sites which apparently promote objectives deemed to damage public order (ie. separatists).

This message has been coming up for months, but only with True! I can acess the same sites with other ISP's no problem, so it is not gov wide, but True Wide!

They can block anything they want its their connection.  Just like you don't or may not let people smoke in your house.  Only the Gov is req a court order, to order a site blocked.  The ISP can and is req. to up hold the law and keep 90 record of your internet activity.  They can be hald to account for what you do online even if gov didn't order that site blocked its still an illegal site.  ISP is between rock and a hard place. You can bet your IP is all over that record.  At least it shows the ISP are not sharing notes on what is and is not being blocked.

I cannot get Hutch !! WHY ? I cannot get my TV Times online ESPN Star Asia !! Why ? always get that silly message to say site is blocked, yet both are Asian sites, as well as a few other sites… I use Firefox and also tried IE both = blocked..

I have to use a ‘hide ISP’ site to read what programs is on TV…. Always opens 1^st time then

There a few different ways you can go.

First at all I suggest that you capture the same Screens where this message came up from different computers with different ISP's! You can do so to use the computer of some Friend for an different ISP. Capture the full Screen include Addressbar.

Now you can contact TRUE for to clarify why that site is blocked.

Or you contact the Consumer Protection and Universal Service Department of NTC Thailand to file a complaint.

But importand is that you have the evidence that this site is blocked by TRUE only but open within other ISP's.

But all of the above you need to do by yourself.

Don't sound like the type of site that would be blocked.  Be sure your not getting a re-direaction and its really try to open the site you think you try to go to.  Thats an old trick to mess with bookmarks and things and many other ways, like change your dns to their server and send you where they want no matter what you type in.  I can't see True blocking a TV guide site.

But I have to say that this system is rather new. Before, True redirected the "wrong" websites on a page with the ICT logo.

Now it's more "anonymous" in a way. They might be shy ?

It's perfectly in line with the general cowardness of the authorities (with a new government in charge, you never know.... plus all those damned foreigners who are looking on us... bad image). Especially when the guys at the Ministry banned many websites linked to... Thaksin last year...

Y E S……. I went into the little local TRUE shop, the manageress was there and she speaks good English, I told her and she tried + also got that message, she said she would look into it as to why both ESPN and Hutch were both on there list.

She the manageress of TRUE told me to use a Proxy + showed me how to set up the proxy address…

Strange because I thought that using a Proxy was banned in Thailand ?? that is why I have not changed to using a Proxy, and just use a ‘hide ISP’ on the odd site I need to use.

Is it OK to use a Proxy full time ?

There's no point gathering evidence - unless it is a site which was inadvertently blocked, nothing will happen. I repeat that it affects all ISPs except Inet-TH - but each ISP blocks different sites, based on a police "request" a few years back.

Strangely enough, a site which was blocked on my True at the office was not blocked on a True signal at my home. A simple test shows that the domain name is being blocked, but NOT the IP. So you can either try to obtain the IP address of blocked sites (go to Command Prompt and type tracert domain.name and hit enter. Or you can change your DNS servers to OpenDNS.

Proxies are not illegal in Thailand.

It's not only for him - only for Bangkok, maybe. Because here at my office (on TRUE as well) i can NOT open either one of those three sites. BUT i have NO PROBLEM getting Hutch, ESPN Star Asia and TV Guide Online. Not using any proxy or similar, also using TRUE's own DNS servers.

Maybe the OP's computer has a "browser hijacker" or trojan that redirects his requests to some dodgy, hence blocked, sites? I've seen that once where www.google.com would go to a porn-search-site instead.

No problem on True ADSL in BKK

Also Hutch, ESPN Star Asia and TV Guide Online no problem.

I don't use a proxy or open dns, just plain direct Internet.

I've just done the same.... and still can't open either one of those sites. Not that i would be interested in the content anyway (i'm no gambler and gay) but just to let you know - does NOT work for me (at the office in Lad Phrao, BKK, on TRUE ADSL).
