I like the comment by Laopo about "swimming pool for fish' :D

Rimmers pond! No bio filters, frogspawn, frogs, snakes, chemicals or concrete. Just a pond with over 1000 fish, weeds and water lilleys.

That is one hel_l of a pond is that 3 nan to a Rai for the pond alone. Rimmer I wish my girl didn't see that photo..now she wants to build a 1/2 a Rai fishpond ourselves. By the way thanks for the Bosny concrete filler tip!

We live in Bang Sare just down the road a bit from you. I was wondering if you have much extra mosquitoes from the pond ? It looks sweeeeet!

Err we have about 2 1/2 rai but we elected to keep the bottom of the land natural. Had a big digger in and made a big hole. Then it turned out that we seemed to have a natural water course so I followed it up with another digger and made a stream and waterfall. Then of course we had to have a bridge over the stream!! (never ending)

Zero mosquito as we have over 1000 talapia fish that eat the larvae, Then my GF and her sister catch the fish on a daily basis and in turn we eat the fish :o. We may have a couple of 'gators though :D

We must visit with you some time if you are so close.

Fill it with some creeping bentgrass, add a couple of holes (with pins and flags, of course) and it would make for a great putting green.

:D

What made you decide to fill it in and go smaller?

Did you use the structure for a water tank?

Congrats Naam, that's a great burglar deterrant - one hel_l of a punji pit.

as the pond was too big there was no way to control algae bloom except by spending additional 120k Baht plus minimum running cost for the pumps of 15-20k Baht a month. couldn't see my fish in the green pea soup except when feeding them. at one time i was thinking using the shell as tank for garden irrigation. but implementing the idea exceeds the capability of local construction companies. besides that it would have been too expensive.

It's very small :D

but hopefully manageable :o

'Manageable', Funny you should mention that because that's important and here I am managing my pond! Although you can't see me I am managing which pond weeds to keep and which to throw, also ensuring my drink is the right temperature and I don't have too much sun on my lounger :D

A couple of tips for those trying to control algae in a pond. Most say you need to cover 50% of the surface with plants if you are in a sunny spot. Also floating plants suck up the excess nutrients from the water that cause algae growth. There are some great websites that help you calculate how many fish your pond can spport and how many of which type of plant to put in to balance the ponds water. Most will go green during the balancing stage, but will then become clear. I have seen the rec at 1" of fish for every 10 gallons of water in your pond. Hope this might help some of you. I have 3 ponds and dearly love them, so relaxing.

based on two years pond experience in Thailand i think 50% is not enough. tried all kinds of floating plants but they die after a relatively short time perhaps because of my well's water quality. now i'm starting again and will report the results in a few months.

Naam's reduced pond is slooooowwwwwly but surely taking shape:

How long till that huge dog of yours digs it out again

actually he is busy every morning between 07.40 and 07.43 hrs to add to it. he is also "watering" the sculptures but i don't have high hopes that they grow. :o

Hope you are right, you wouldn't want even one of those monsters any larger than they are already. Might frighten the

fishes. :D

The shape of your bridge, although not the same, reminds me of the famous bridge over the pond of CLAUDE MONET and which he painted several times....

I like your (or your Lady's) art choices from different parts of the world.

Do I recognize:

1. an African piece of art, being a (Bronze or Hard Wood) lady with Water bottle on her head ?

2. a three trunked elephant, most likely from Thailand; in Bronze or Teak ?

3. A dancing or copulating couple; Thai origin ? (they could be doing both...dancing and copulating ? :D )

4. A Chinese dragon for good luck, casted of concrete ?

5. The Vase on the left is difficult to determine but likely with Lotus flowers ?. :o

BTW, I like your pond much better now than it was before; it's more in shape with the environment...more chique so to say.

in this case i had the exclusive say. tasks left are to replace some plants which i put as a temporay measure with some more exclusive ones. difficult to find in the Pattaya area as most nurseries sell the same boring plants.

1. correct (bronze, Africa)

2. correct (bronze, Bhutan)

3. correct (bronze, Nepal, copulating)

4. correct (concrete)

5. nothing special (bought to cover the main drainage pipe)

LaoPo

Ya know I studied that picture for ideas, but when we mocked up the bridge I felt the slope was too much to be practical so reduced it down to where it is now, All I need now is lots of flowers in the background I already got a white beard and a

big hat :D

You're welcome to some water snails from my pond if you want.

They do a great job of algae control.

Send me a PM within the next 24 hours if you're interested. (travelling after that so no internet connection).

I'll be home most of next week.
