Hi All

I stumbled upon this site by accident, and I have to say this is a wonderful forum. I have read many advice on obtaining a British passport for a newborn, but my case is a little different so I hope some of you maybe able to offer advice??

I have Thai/British dual citizenship. Currently work for an airline in Germany and I am 4 months pregnant with a babygirl. I am planning to enjoy my maternity leave in Thailand. My parents have retired there, and my sister and her family also lives there so I just want to be around them for the birth.

The father of the baby is currently deployed in Iraq until 2009 (he is US citizen), so he will not be here for the birth (tears). Having read the Birth Registration Policy for the British Embassy in Thailand, I am worried I may have a problem when it comes to obtaining a passport for my daughter. One, I read you must have the father's original passport, something I won't have. Two, in order to include the father's name on the birth certificate they require the paternity declarations signed by BOTH parents IN PERSON at the British Embassy. Which is just not gonna happen unfortunately (same policy in England so I understand but the birth certificate can be amended at a later date so its not a problem). So....

* Do you know if the policy is the same for Thai birth certificate? That is the father's name cannot be included if he is not there?

* Also, does not having the father's original passport mean I cannot register the birth at the British Embassy?? I understand from what I've read in this forum so far that you DO NOT need to register the birth at the Embassy in order to get a British passport for the baby?

* Does that mean that as long as I have a certified translated copy of the baby's Thai birth certificate, I can still apply for her passport through the British Embassy????? Bypassing the rip off fee of 15,000 baht for registration at the embassy??

Sorry it's long. But I would appreciate any advice :-)

if your husband is deployed in iraq, as military or similar, there maybe a different way of doing things since he cant be present (since he is in the service of his goverment blablabla); thru a military office attache or something... we are assuming he is american? such as power of attorney or official military forms...

why dont u ask at the consulates/military offices....

Before we can decide whether your child will be British, we need to know how you acquired British citizenship. Were you born in the UK or abroad. If born outside of the UK, was the parent who transmitted their citizenship to you born in the UK or abroad?

Also have a read of this thread.

Hey, congratulations on the happy news ! :o

Yes, be careful about assuming that your daughter can get UK citizenship easily - unless you yourself were born in the UK.

By the way - just in case it comes to that - maternity hospitals in germany are great. I've had 2 kids here. I am also UK/Thai, living near Frankfurt.

Good luck with the pregnancy.
