I'm a 'legal-resident expat" Married to a Thai for years, on a NON O Visa. I file taxes in my home country as a NON Res.

Can I get a tourist visa to India as "other nationalities normally resident in Thailand" in 1 day, or must I wait 5 days like the other tourists?

Thanks!

I got my tourist visa for India after 5 days, they said they couldn't do it any quicker than that. They weren't interested in whether i was resident or not.

My interpretation of the web info. is that if you have had a Thai Work Permit for 3 years then they'll do it in one day.

I don't come in this bracket so no idea if it actually works (I wait 5 days for business visas even though I'm now on my third). :o

My understanding is that even though they say if you have had 3 years of Non-Imm they will do it in one day, in fact unless you have someone [indian] argue the point, they will take the 5 days.

ok... there are two things going on here:

1. being able to obtain "A" visa outside your home country (there are few nations that this is not a TOTAL hassle). you can do this in bkk, thailand

2. five days is normal - period. they actually check your png status w/ india and your country so it will not be any faster. further, if you have an honest problem waiting for things maybe you want to rethink india.

all that other concern/crap about your visa status in thailand does not matter half an anna.

-stay well away from tourist spots and you will have an memorable trip. not to do this, especially if you are a single not so well traveler will be at your peril. prices are roughly same as thailand although decent rooms are poor value.

If you bring your work permit book with you they will do in one day. When my parents were here last month they even did it for them in one day. I asked and they said if I could show my work permit book then no problem.

Addressing the above points:

1) Indeed, it is a bit unusual that a foreign national can apply for an Indian visa outside of their own country. I tried to do the same at the Nigerian embassy in Bangkok...no way. I think if I could have talked to someone a bit higher up I could have made a case, but the "gatekeeper" (lady with a bit of authority) was not letter me past her. I ended up making a trip to USA for the visa.

2) Really, what is the hassle with having to wait 5 days? The way I see it, that is five days that you can delay going to India...a good thing, my experience has shown me.

When you apply for an Indian Visa they charge you the Visa Fee

PLUS the Cost of a Fax to your Home Country.

The Fax is to enquire if you are wanted by the Police

back home.

They give the home Authorities 5 days to tell them if you are wanted.

If they hear nothing - they Issue the Visa.

So in theory if you have been "Resident" in Thailand for 3 years or more

you probably will not be wanted at home - and they say they will then

process your Application in 1 day same as Thai Passport holders.

But if you are on Non-Imm visa in Thailand - even if you have been here 10 years

- as I have - they still want to send the Fax !!! And you wait 5 days.

When I applied for my India visa in Thailand, they were not the least bit interested in my Work Permit. I was told if I have been in Thailand on the same visa for three years (qualified to apply for resident, not necessarily resident), then it would take one day. Since that did not apply to me, I did not explore it any further to see if they really meant "Thai Resident" or not.

Also, they would only issue me a six-month business visa. If I wanted the one year visa I had to apply in my home country...which I did the next time around.
