To all you new comers that are interested in coming to Surin for the Elephant festival and have either never been before, don't know where Surin is,or just trust web sites, beware of thaifocus.com.

On their Surin page about the Elephant festival a box flights to Surin are available. If you follow this directive you will probably end up on Surin beach in Phuket. Another truly 'Amazing Thailand' cock-up

Try it

I'm due to drive down to surin for the Elephant festival in November. I will be staying with a Thai friend. I believe the festival is on the 3rd Saturday of November is that correct. I will pop in to see you when I'm there this time too.

Lamps, Do you happen to know if they are putting over an airservice for the show? Also how many people actually come to Surin at this time?

It would be unlikely. Air Andaman had a service BKK to Surin a couple of years ago. They discontinued the service just before the start of the festival.

Regarding numbers, it's difficult to estimate. There are a h*ll of a lot though. Even though the hotels will be tripling their rates, it is likely that every one will be 100% full.

Actually in typical Thai fashion, two years ago, they cut the flights to Surin from everyday to 3 a week during the Elephant festival. Just after that Air Andaman went bust. If they had doubled their flights during this period they might have staved off bankruptcy, but as we all know T.I.T. There are flights to and from Buriram Airport on a daily basis with Phuket air ( if they are still operating by November) Of course in any other country on the globe, an airport right by the scene of a major festival ( the elephant stadium is a three minute walk from the airport) would be opened for the duration of the said feastival. But that little three letter word pops up again TiT. Surin is absolutely packed at that time of year. There are no free seats on buses, trains, planes or taxis in or out. All the hotels are overflowing so if you want to book, book early.
