NBT TV Phuket Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 MiniVDO: http://thainews.prd.go.th/newsenglish/prev...php?news_id=477 After several attempts to seek assistance from many agencies in resolving the illegal Russian-speaking guides problem, but with no progress, the Russian Language Guide Club of Phuket today will submit a letter to the Phuket Governor to call for the authority to seriously tackle the problem. The Club’s chairman Pirom Bunmee stated that many Russians now come in as tourists, but illegally work as guides. He pointed out that 70% of Russian tourists to the island now use Russian nationals as guides and this is forcing Thai nationals to be unemployed, while more money goes to the foreigners. The problems were found in Bangkok, Pattaya and now in Phuket. He said the club had requested assistance from many organizations, but still no action has been taken. Tour companies usually claim that the Thai guides do not speak good Russian, while the illegal guides who get caught are normally released after arrest.
