HOUSE VIRTUALLY DEMOLISHED BY ROGUE CONCRETE BLOCK

Careless construction workers demolishing an old motorbike shop building, on July 27, 2008, were responsible for a giant concrete block falling on a neighbouring house in Pattaya, virtually wrecking it. The house owner complained that he and his girlfriend could have been killed if they‘d been in the house at the time.

On July 27, at 11.45 AM, Pol.Lt.Col.Suphachai Phui-gaew-kam, Pattaya Investigator, received a phone call concerning the damage caused by the falling concrete block from a construction site. The incident occurred at house No. 54/5, Moo 9, Soi Nok-khao, Central Pattaya. Police were duly despatched to the scene.

Arriving at the scene, officials found a shop house on 20 sq.wah of land, severely damaged by a large concrete block, 1 metre in diameter, with a great deal of construction debris, surrounding the house. All the contents of the house, including furniture and appliances were damaged.

10 careless, inexperienced construction workers had apparently been demolishing the 4-storey, Mitr Yont motorbike shop to build a new building and allowed the concrete block to fall on the adjacent house of Mr.Pracha Sakornyen, (36) a shoe shop owner. He told the officials, extremely alarmed, that he and his girlfriend had just left the house, less than 10 minutes previously; otherwise they could have been killed with the large concrete block having fallen onto the middle of their bedroom.

Police investigators then called Mr. Thonglor Gaew-galaya, (43), from Udonthani, Foreman of G.V.C. Contractor Company, in for questioning. Mr. Thonglor admitted culpability for the damage to the house caused by the rogue concrete block and the management of Mitr Yont Company, the owners of the project, will take full responsibility for the total damage and will find a temporary refuge for the victims to stay. Nevertheless, police charged them for reckless damage to property.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sanit Boonmachai, council member of Pattaya City, came to examine the site and was appalled at the damage, promising to initiate a thorough examination. For the moment, however, he will leave the matter in the hands of the police. He also said that there should have been a site inspection by Construction Building officials.

There are building inspectors? :D

Where did they get their accreditation? The Corn Flakes box diploma factory? You don't see and evidence of them in the construction standards. :o

Didn't this guy know that you are supposed to drop everything and run away if an accident takes place?

I'm stunned.
